UPS driver arrested after admitting to drinking a ‘half pint of whiskey’ on the job – WDRB

A UPS truck driver is charged with DUI and careless driving after he admitted to drinking on the job.

According to an arrest report, an employee of Middletown Elementary School called police Monday when the “regular” UPS driver, Matthew Caskey, showed up smelling of alcohol. Officers searched the truck and found nothing, but after the officer left the scene, he saw a UPS truck speeding on Old Shelbyville Road.

As the truck passed the officer going the opposite way, the arrest report says, it almost hit the raised curb. Caskey was then pulled over, but he denied making a delivery to Middletown Elementary School, although a passenger in the truck confirmed that. The officer noticed slurred speech from Caskey, the arrest report says, and eyes that looked “very tired and red.”

UPS driver snaps viral photo of child in leaves, urges drivers to be alert and careful – WDRB

A picture of a child playing in the leaves close to a road has gone viral.

An Elkhart UPS driver saw the child while delivering packages on his route. The driver says he’s trying to raise awareness about a safety issue.

Driver Jordan Weaver was delivering packages in a neighborhood when he saw a young boy hiding in the leaves.

A leaf pile is fun for children, but can be dangerous when it’s close to the road.

“I couldn’t believe it at first — my heart completely stopped,” said Weaver.

UPS avoids work stoppage as freight workers approve new contract – Marketwatch

A strike would have caused disruption in a trucking market already struggling with tight capacity and higher shipping rates.

United Parcel Service Inc.’s freight workers ratified a final contract offer, averting a work stoppage that prompted the carrier to clear its network ahead of the vote.

The final offer cleared with 77% of votes cast approving the five-year contract, the Teamsters union said Sunday. The agreement covers 11,600 workers.

UPS said it would immediately resume pickups for its freight customers, which primarily ship heavier goods and bulk shipments that move on pallets. The company last week stopped picking up orders to empty its freight network of any cargo that could have been stranded during a strike.

11,000 UPS Freight Drivers May Go on Strike Monday, as Holiday Shopping Season Looms – Fortune

Ahead of early holiday shopping, United Parcel Service Inc. has been warning UPS Freight customers of potential delays. That’s because on Monday, some 11,600 UPS Freight workers, who are also members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union, may go on strike.

UPS posted a warning on its website and confirmed to Fortune in a statement that the company has already taken precautions against shipping delays by ceasing to accept new pickups and emptying its network of freight by Friday, Nov. 9. UPS Freight picked up new heavy shipments until yesterday, Nov. 7, and only guaranteed delivery of ground freight shipments through Nov. 8.

“The company has now begun discussions with UPS Freight customers to inform them of the potential for service disruption and the need to arrange alternative carriers. Because we do not have a guarantee against a work stoppage, we cannot afford to put our customers’ volume at risk of being stranded in our system,” UPS said in a statement.
