I wish I could have done my production week in a Sterling. The worst shifting Sterling is still smoother than the best single screw International I've ever driven. The twin screw International tractors with almost the same tractor numbers are so much nicer to drive than the single screws.
If I have to drive a stick I prefer the 272xxx macks... Those internationals drop in rpm's too damn fast....thank heavens they are starting to crush them here..

Single screw, twin screw. Are those UPS terms for single and double axles? Or terms from somewhere else?

It's an industry term for the number of drive axles. I've picked it up from the older drivers and supervisors we with have with real driving experience.

We also have tandem Mack's which are single screw with a tag axle. They have no differential on the rear axle. They ride nice, get better mpg but suck in snow or anything that isn't level.

You can probably get a better answer from Google.
