Y is it so expensive here and so cheap in the rest of the west? its policy
Yea, the policy of the college admin office. If the govt added 30k/year for tuition for every student who wanted to go, college tuitions would go up by 35k/ year to "cover costs". Then you'd hear about the $135M athletic center and the 500k/year deans the colleges need to "remain competitive".

Radically, what SHOULD happen is college aid should be cut to zero. Whatever people can afford to pay, that's it. No loans that turn them into indentured servants (even if they signed the docs). No "gov't aid" which distorts the actual market.

Let "the market" figure out how to educate the workforce they need at a competitive cost, without government welfare. Maybe the model would go back to Franciscan friars in burlap robes teaching in a monastery.

education is not supposed to be about job training

btw many eu countries its affordable or free, or they pay you to do school.

when education is expensive, you cant compete with countries that make it affordable

i agree lending money drives up teh costs.

Yes it is about job training. How else would we compete with the countries that make it affordable?

We can walk and chew gum, it's not a binary choice.

You can be educated to play your role in a productive society (so we ALL eat) AND you can enrich yourself with a few classes besides. If the true cost of education was reflected in the price it would be achievable for most.

no thats the kind of corporatized education that doesnt teach ppl how to teach.

for example my dad did mech engineering but they taught clockwork orange in school. thats all gone now, by the time i went to teh same school it was just about the job.

you would compete with other countries that make it affordable by making it affordable yourself.

OOPS!

having high cost of education puts america at a competitive disadvantage with any country that makes cost of college free or pays students to do school

america pays high school graduates to murder in exotic countries
