The ten% in my 401k plus the fine investing that Mrs.407 does for us for the last 14 years of our marriage will keep us eating very well after retirement. This doesn't include a pension. See here son I might seem to you like a dumb beer drinking hillbilly but my wife isn't and she has had enough sense all along to put it away. Like she has always said pay yourself first. Actually we just went over our July budget about ten minutes ago. God bless

Good to know its all about you union brother.... thanx I appreciacte it brother. Your the reason theres no more unity.

If you don't save money for your future, I'm not gonna care either if half your pension goes to healthcare in 20 years.

Start saving money like a mature adult and you won't care either !

The silent majority will vote to pass this TA.

I agree.... however, as others have said.....those same individuals will be complaining the most about the "Union" over the next 5 years... "How could the Union ever allowed this language in the contract", etc..........

I but 5% in 401k and saved 2 months worth of strike money. I think you also need to look to the future. You have what five maybe ten years left? I have 8 years in. So I have a good 25 left. The way this contract is looking if voted yes. I will be up sheets creek.

I will vote a BIG NO!!! I know I will be labeled TDU by some for this post, I am Not so cut the BS.I am a 26 year employee at UPS in Central Cali, elected Steward for 24 years and former E-Board member. This TA will raise the rate that Retirees and current employees pay for healthcare, part-time and full-time alike. It will keep employees under PEER 80 from retiring before age 55 ( I would be able retire at 50 with healthcare under the current CBA ), no healthcare till 55 under the new TA. The TA doesn't really do much for the Xmas bike route problem (many grievances flushed down the drain). The progression from PT to FT is getting bigger every contract. This is a BAD deal for the Southwest!! There are a few stewards on Brown Cafe pushing a Yes vote, but the stewards I talk to here on the coast are Voting NO!! I choose to take a stand for what is right! But no matter how you Vote, VOTE!! Or don't complain about what you get!!!

If you are a full time worker at ups and this is your career there is no reason EVER that you should be worried about your retirement. Live within your means and on top of this you work to much over time as it is. Trying to explain to a complete stranger my worth as a teamster is a complete waist of my time. I doubt yiu are a steward because if you were a d your knew the day too day grind hat I have to go through you would never make this statement. I will never meet you so it's irrelevant.

Going to be interesting to see our feeder dept erode if this load of manure passes. And the part timers who will never go full-time. And the young package drivers that get the stew worked out of them. And the below inflationary raises that we receive, causing good people to lose their homes because we get shafted. Oh, and the poor retirees that can't afford the visits to the doctor's office. Maybe Stink and 407 will enjoy cat food when they get old .....and be sure to thank Hoffa Hall for making all this possible........BC (not bitchin and crying)
I grew up poor son. You couldn't imagine what I've seen. Instead of making excuses I'm setting up my family and my retirement. It's a fact that most upser who are full time and this is there career live beyond there means and for this I don't feel bad. As far as the feeders changing I hate it but when I costs 58 dollars an hour to operate and fed ex can get it there in there advanced feeder network quicker and 20 cheaper it's a sign of the times. I don't like it but if you knew anything that transpired in negotiations numbers or financial wise you would be a little alarmed. For what it's worth I'd give two bucks back an hour to give part times and extra two bucks would you give back 5? In the grand scheme of things this would make a lot of teamsters happy and it would be fair for the actual work we all do.

Annoy a liberal today. Hit them with facts.

There is the "SON" remark you keep making to people you DISAGREE with. It must be your way to make youself feel better about your position on this TA.
And who says he doesn't live within his means?
Guess what your worth is as a teamster?----The same as any other teamster brother and sister, steward or not. You need to stop thinking of yourself as higher than other teamsters because you are a steward, you are not.

We had a driver here with over 40 years, who was still working in his late 60s. He absolutely refused to retire until his 401K reached $1M, despite the fact that him and his wife (who was also still working into here late 60s as a personal bankler) were set to earn more than $10,000 in monthly pension & social payments alongside minimal expenses (they owned their home). Sadly, he passed away of natural causes before he retired. Honestly, people need to be realistic about how long they'll live & how much money they'll need. You're not going to live the save lifestyle in your 70s that you did in your 60s, and certainly not when you're fortunate to be 80. Turn off programs like Suzzie Orman that convince you to save more than you'll ever need -- always remember that the more you save, the more they earn, and that's their goal.

It's more than feasible to live a quality retirement off maximum social security (sans a few high cost communities). Toss in the pension check and most of us will be able to enjoy a very high-quality retirement. 401Ks are just a bonus, quite frankly, and much of it will probably be passed along when you move on (unless you choose to spend it in the casino). Wouldn't you rather they earn it themselves?

With the uncertainty of health care , you are foolish not to save as much as you can now. I respect anyone who saves now to make life easier later.

407 I agree with all of this except the little part of ups not wanting you to reach retirement ....how many drivers have been " fired" over the years...even if some do get their job back..nobody here has a for sure trip to retirement here..jmho..

I know what you mean cold I've been fired a bunch of times and been out up to six and a half weeks. I just act like I'm going to make it and I don't worry anymore about not making it. I do the job to a tee and hope Jesus gets me through. We are all just day to day.

That's one of those urban legends.

You know how many times I have heard that the average UPS Management person dies 2 years after retirement.

My guess is the average Teamster retiree as well as a UPS management retiree lives longer than the average.

I absolutely encourage saving, but I write my comments to stimulate thinking among those who've been driven to believe they need X amount of dollars in their 401K before they can retire. I've been to many seminars in which patrons are encouraged to carry huge, costly debt as a necessary sacrifice toward retirement saving, or to work longer than they may need to reach the same goal. Often, this advice isn't within people's best interests & is encourage only because the many people who manage your money (who may very well believe what they preach) earn huge fees off it. As it is, the average family pays $4300 annually toward inferior health care benefits, does not receive ANY company-provided retirement benefits but manages to get by.

I often hear around the shop that 'you should have X dollars saved in your 401K to retire,' and read similar advice on BC. I'm just merely stimulating the thought process that for many, this isn't true. Life slows down as we get older, and material needs transition toward psychological ones. In essence, many are not saving for their retirement but instead somebody's inheritance.

i dont believe the management statistic....unless they are 400 lbs form sitting at a desk for 30 years...I do believe the union stat...especially someone here who's body gets beat down everyday...then take in consideration the stress and ON AVERAGE I do believe it.

Its kind of like dave ramsey who believe you shouldnt have more than 15% of your income into a house loan at a 10 to 15 year loan. Then max out your 401k and a roth ira...then have 10X life insurance and putting money(hundreds of dollars a month) into kids college funds...and try to pay for cash for everything else. I like his program but for the average family this isnt possible unless you have no or low house payments. With his wisdom a family who is making 100k should only have a house that is 150k or less....not sure that is even possible unless in only a few parts of the country. You do what you can and hope for the best.

I will admit that I would feel MUCH different with this job if there was no union here...because it would be worse(if that is even possible). I have seen drivers who should have lost their job get it back..I have seen drivers who I would have fired at the drop of a hat get fired and was 100% comfortable with it( stealing electronics over and over same person, drinking ON the job etc)..but I have yet in 22 years see someone fired for really anything else(and have it stick) and that does feel pretty good..I like to think that we are week to week around here..lol
