Barge service from New Bedford could solve UPS’ SSA reservation problem - The Inquirer and Mirror

A New Bedford company could come to the rescue of UPS, which missed last fall's deadline for Steamship Authority truck reservations to Nantucket, losing out on dozens of ferry spaces it normally books to transport packages to the island.

41 North Offshore LLC is seeking a license from the SSA to make up to 70 freight runs to the island between mid-May and mid-October, with each barge carrying three tractor-trailers. UPS has already contacted the company about transporting its trucks, according to the 41 North license application to the Steamship Authority.

In order to accommodate UPS’ lack of reservations, the boat line is offering the shipper the remaining available space on its Nantucket ferries, and prioritizing UPS trucks on its wait-lists, SSA general manager Bob Davis said late last month.
