They should have begun worrying about this 30 years ago but they were too busy organizing easy to organize public sector employees because the unions had the courts on their side and public sector employers had very few if any of the counter measures private sector employers had. As a result unions got fat and became increasingly disinterested in what was happening in the private sector. I talked to my state's AFL-CIO president who admitted that it has for all purposes lost the private sector.
