I just looked it up He died in 2019 he was 87

My grandfather never bought anything on time in his life including his home. Could they have spent more on some things(?), sure, but that's how they lived. Never wasted anything.

Doubtful your grandfather bought his home without the benefit of inherited proceeds.
Unless one was a sharecropper or wealthy almost no one bought things on time other than their dwelling in those days.
