A lot of Canadian produce, in the north US, is actually Mexican. They can produce it so cheap, that it still pays to ship it to a Canadian warehouse named "So&So Farms" where they just put a Canada sticker on it, and dump it in the USA.

That's one example why US producers want country of origin labels.

this system which gives us empty shelves also turns us into passive consumers of info

most of us anyways...
