Exit poll

The exit polls are showing this contract is going down in flames but in this case Dewey wins.

High turnout
High amount of no votes.
Better offer.

I don't know what "Exit Polls" are being referred to here. I think this contract is going to pass no matter what you read on any discussion board. The fact of the matter, just a few thousand out of 200,000 UPS workers come on Brown Cafe or one of the other message boards so what you read here will have little effect on the outcome. The company and the union are pushing this as a fair deal and that is how I think it will go. TDU has been fighting hard against this because they are out of power and are trying to gain it back. I have been through a few contracts the last 32 years, and I think this one is going to pass. Its not perfect, but then they never are. Thats just the nature of these things.

I don't put a lot off faith in polls. In our center there are ( just estimating ) about 115 or 120 delivery drivers and we have 5 feeder runs. When we had the meeting about the contract at the local two part-timers, one feeder driver, and about 25 Del. drivers attended. Although it is just our facility, I have not heard anything to make believe anything otherwise than this contract will pass. Maybe it's because the economy in our area is so bleak. Our economy here has always relied on GM and the automotive industry and that is shaky to say the least. There just aren't a lot of jobs period and maybe most guys realize they are lucky to have a job that pays well, with benefits, a pension, and a 401k that after all the bills are paid, if they haven't extended themselves too far that they can contribute a fair amount to that to help prepare for the future. I guess what I'm saying is from what I am gathering from most guys that I have talked to and if you will, what I am not hearing, which is not a lot of complaints, the contract should pass in our barn.

been pretty negative around here (WORMA) though I know thats hardly indicative of the country as a whole. Most of the PTers on this shift seem to have voted, I know everyone I supervise has (no I didn't ask how, its not my business). Those who volunteered the info were the ones who said no, but who knows if they really did. I did encourage them to vote, but not how.

The post is meant as a jab at the teamsters and ups continual barrage of literature telling upsers to return their ballots marked yes.

Don't tell people how to vote. Return your ballot with a vote would suffice. Encorage the employee to read thru the contract and make an educated decision.

Is this contract a yes or no for your classification? Package drivers, feeders, part timers, air drivers and combo jobs. Could there be gains for one group at the expense of sacreafices by another.

Just because someone represents you does not mean they will act in your best interest. Look out for number one is still very popular.

I don't care how anyone votes but we all should vote. I don't think that you can throw a blanket yes vote to all groups.
Read it again and do what's best for you and your family.

I think what the brother was referring to, as “exit polls,” are the polls in this forum and possibly other forums. Which of course is not an accurate account for many reasons. As you all know I voted no on this contract. But I am hardly nave enough to think that the polls on these sites are a failsafe representation of what to expect.

If for no other reason than the socioeconomic & cultural standpoint, not everyone is interactive in forums. This can be clearly seen in the number of memberships of these forums alone, which include management and retirees (who also are voting as well, I would suspect). Also, we should take in to account, that believe it or not, not everybody has a computer, yes still! And a further key point is, that those who are content in their vote, who don’t even talk to their coworkers at work about the contract, are a large enough majority (either way they voted) to make any poll determinable.

Lastly, lets face it, we, in these forums, are a minority; all of us. We are people who, regardless of education, or job class, or any conceivable status measurable, are proactive in the concerns of our lives. So much so, that we go beyond the point of a simple chat by the water cooler, and get involved on a cyber/global level.

So while the polls on these sites may indicate a semi-consistent lean in one particular direction, by no means are they a scientific account of what to expect.

In all, these polls have excluded: people that don’t have computers, people that don’t go on forums (even if they have computers), people that are not proactive enough to care, people that do not send in surveys or vote (yet alone polls), ect…Ect.

Even if there was a 10,000 member poll on these sites it would still be a fixed account for the reasons I have stated…so in the end, we will just have to see.

I started this post with a propostorous misleading and ethically corrupt statement as ups and the teamsters sending mailings with return your ballots marked yes and this will have an affect on the final count as some people at ups work as directed and will vote as directed

I have talked to a couple agents who happen to be in california for some ibt pension talks this week, and from what he said to me that alot of locals have been swamped by angey upsers during there meetings. He believes that there is to much pressure on the ibt from local officers who have been relaying the message from the members for any shady vote tallying(trying to pass it with a no vote). He said they will count the ballots and go from there. If the members vote it down or vote fot it, than we have to live with it for the next 5 years, please people just vote.

ROFLMAO about the 'car' up on blocks. I know the intent behind this comment but it was funny nonetheless.

And, Griff, I'm a former UPS'er but I'm STILL waiting for a good reason to vote one way or the other. So far, I'm not getting one. If I were still a UPS employee and a strike were called, I'm not sure what I'd do.... -Rocky

I wasn't trying to be funny. Most people would be in for a rough time, we are hardworking middle class people. I certainly don't have the means to keep myself afloat if a strike goes down for much more than 3 months or so. I would have to find work elsewhere to keep going. Does this make me fearful of a strike, of course it does, but it is what it is and I would NEVER cross the line.

I didn't think you were trying to be funny, Griff. Weird sense of humor here .

UPS'ers work hard for their money, no doubt or argument there. You're not alone in not being able to support yourself for longer than three months or so. I think that's pretty good planning given what I keep reading about the dire state of savings in this country. I can not categorically say I would not cross a picket line. Red has tried to convince me not to ever cross a picket line but I'm a little too independent for my own d*mn good. All the best, UPS'ers....-Rocky
