The following has been cut and pasted from
Working at United Parcel Service (UPS)

"Driver Training Specialist and CDL A DRIVER TRAINER"

What's up with all these postings at UPSjobs.com? I assume they're both the same job with different names.

I heard they’re creating these positions to help train new feeder drivers through 80 hour packets and to help with conducting feeder schools. Similar to the feeder on road job but without having to supervise a group of drivers.

Apparently DOT is making it mandatory that all driver trainers have at least 2 years of verifiable driving experience. Between the upcoming changes to feeder dispatch this is the new direction. I suppose we’ll all see how this works out.

It’s an OMS position so you’re paid hourly And overtime after 8. I heard from a colleague in Oregon that they filled one of these jobs with a feeder driver and he was offered 39/hr to do the job.

I was told by human resources that I would be going to driver trainER school. I have searched the threads ad nauseum and I can't get specific information about how long driver trainer school is.

Anybody? Bueller?

If driver trainer is considered a non-union supervisory job will you have to relinquish (I used a big word) your union membership?

DTS is a 3 week corporate transportation school conducted in South Holland, IL. As a supervisor at UPS it was the hardest thing I’ve prepared for and most I’ve been pushed at UPS.

Generally they’ll give you 5 weeks of one on one training with another supervisor who has already been through it to prepare you before you go.

You’ll need to be able to conduct a pretrip and couple of a set while quoting all of the UPS methods in 45 minutes, be able to recite 10 point commentary, recite safe work methods, explain thoroughly space and visibility, talk about all of your brakes and gauges, complete a proper post trip and uncouple of your set while quoting the methods in under 10 minutes. While on road you have to demonstrate that you can train and that you can safely operate the equipment while demonstrating good use of space and visibility.

It’s very tough, but everyone helps each other get through it, you go to skid school, you take a trip to Amish country, and you make some good friends.
