See, now you're getting it, lol. I can also have an excellent meal here for less than $10 that would easily cost $20 in the States. I'm staying in short term housing here that includes all utilities, excellent wi-fi and daily breakfast for $610 for the month. In June I'll be in Merida, the capital, where I'll rent a studio apartment, all included, for $350 a month. Studio is on a nice property with pool and great landscaping. Merida has everything an American city would have except the crime is much lower in Merida. Hot and humid most of the year, but winters are fantastic and it never snows. And only thirty minutes to the beach.

Being the avowed and accredited corporate apologist that you are one could reasonable expect that you would be rewarded with a retirement package large enough not to require an action as extraordinary as leaving your native country in order to simply survive. Fred S leaves the country whenever he likes and goes wherever he likes because he wants to not because economic pressures require it. It's good to know that your are finally at peace in your new country and it is especially comforting to know that you will continue to have 24/7 access to the Fox News Channel.

Not in decades, and certainly not to brag about it. A friend bought some last time we were in Mexico and she was sick for days afterwards. I hope I never end up so destitute that cheap hot dogs impress me.
But I want to and you know why? The U.S. is too full of guys like you who judge someone's worth by how well they are doing financially. I'm "not finally at peace" with Mexico, I fully embrace being here. I used to take long road trips in my 30's. I got skint alive on a recent road trip. You have to have serious money to enjoy yourself traveling in the States anymore. Here I can get on a bus that looks like a jet inside with very comfortable seats and a clean restroom. Travel is easy here. Discount airlines that get you far away for very reasonable amounts. One can live without a car in Mexico. Half the cars on the streets where I'm at are taxis, can go to most places I need to when it's hot for 2 bucks or less. Otherwise walkable. In Merida they've got an excellent bus system, less than 10 cents a ride. Who needs to put up with guys like you when life is easy here?
These particular hotdogs are recommended by several online bloggers. Are you assuming all street vendors serve bad food? How do they stay in business? If you see people waiting at a particular cart pretty good indicator that the food is good. And yes, these dogs were worth bragging about. I loved getting hotdogs at Sonic. These were better, and for the price I'll never starve here.
P.S. The pension I have is from a corporation, not the government. I worked very hard for it, and now I have the freedom to do what I want within reason. Next year I'm in Europe in a country that's pro-American, has just about everything written in both it's language and English, is cheaper than Mexico, has the highest mountains in Europe, has one of the best cuisines in Europe, excellent internet, and is much safer than the U.S.. And can stay there on a 360 day visa that's easily renewed. $500 a month is plenty there, can live very well on $1000.

How do reconcile your contradictory beliefs? You can't afford to retire in Kansas. A state that has been under united republican rule for a century. So conservative philosophy has created a state you can't live in. You are moving to a socialist country in Europe that can provide a better standard of living for much lower cost. Why do you still believe in conservative government? It seems to have failed you.
Where are the affordable blue states? And I'm not moving to a socialist country, but rather one that has embraced capitalism and is doing better all the time. I'm not a native Kansan by the way. And you have embraced capitalism, it's how you are going to pave your way.
Let's put it this way...when a country is developing there are opportunities for everyone to do well as long as the country has installed rights and freedoms for individuals. When a country becomes, as Fred S puts it, a saturated economy, opportunities are limited, and capital leaves that country seeking areas where it can continue to grow. At that point, as has happened in Western Europe, and is starting to happen here, socialism becomes much more attractive in providing for it's population. Seems easier in smaller populations, larger ones like Germany have to have a strong business sector to pull it off. Socialism has never worked where it(and especially it's extreme version communism) has been forced on the population. It's growth in countries where it's semi successful has been gradual. Why do you think the Democrats created Obamacare? Controlling healthcare is controlling 20 percent of the economy. Control that and you eventually control everything. The problem with socialism is taking it too far, which is causing serious problems in southern Europe. So you have to decide, do you want a system where there are opportunities to achieve and be rewarded, or do you want a system where you don't do better or worse than most, and get by, while those in power do very well? That last part is sounding much more like the U.S. these days, but in Europe there's high unemployment in many countries, and people do a lot of hanging out. There no worker's paradise anywhere, some group is always benefiting at the expense of others. For average Joe's in expensive countries your best bet is create an income stream then live in cheaper countries. Or just exist. Your choice.
So you have a pension from a corporation yet you were the one who endlessly cried about how your plan was restructured by that corporation in a way that reduced benefits. Now you're bragging about that pension. As IWBF pointed out. your comments are one great big contradiction. Oh by the way the socialist French presidential candidate won today with 62% of the vote. Then again being the world traveler you are sooner or later you'll run out of money and will look for a socialist leaning country who will take you in.
I get a check every month and will continue to. I stood up for my rights like most people here when FedEx was screwing us. I've never denied they were in the wrong. But that's not the issue. You can't stand anyone having a corporate pension. You want to believe it's all an illusion, that it'll be taken away eventually, and you wait with hopeful anticipation that they'll do just that. Then you can crow with glee. Dream on bubba! If the choice is a reduced pension or none at all I'll take the reduced pension. And p.s., wouldn't be the first time the French surrendered.
As a nonunion fedex at will employee just exactly what rights did you have? After raising holy hell about the way in which your pension benefits were disemboweled now you seem irrationally grateful, your tone and attitude has taken a 180 degree turn and now want to accuse me of being jealous and resentful in an effort to explain away your sudden change in your in opinion of your retirement package.

Do you really think we should just whine and cry about how we were treated forever? At some point you just have to move on. I'm enjoying my retirement, it's infinitely better than scrambling all day. If you're a reader it's a great time to be alive with the internet. When I first started researching living overseas I was always looking for English bookstores. With Kindle, the Internet, and yes, access to good tv I can pass the time when I'm not out walking, checking out hotdog stands

Nope, I've moved on. Spitting in the wind to think I can change things. You can rail against the system all you want, in the end you've wasted time railing against the system. Life is short, carpe diem!
