Lay me off?

So how is that triggered, just by signing up for state unemployment? Asking for a friend, no I really am.
Yes, how exactly it's paid out may vary from state to state (ie whether it's a separate $600 check or just one big one), but it will be automatically done when your unemployment is approved and will come from your state agency.

Really? I saw the 1200 per adult. Is the 600 an every week payment along with unemployment compensation?

Yep.

Actually, 4 Conservative Republicans tried to get that changed. They saw it as an incentive to be laid off. Most people would make more unemployed than working.

They wanted to cap it at what their normal pay was, so that they would not make more,

Bernie Sanders threatened to delay the bill and fight for tighter restrictions on the $500 billion going to Corporations if these Republicans didn't back down.

They backed off. The extra $600/wk is over and above the State amount.

You're not too bright kid.

The reality is this law incentivizes companies to lay people off, self employed people to stop working, and people who weren't working by choice to sign up for a handout.

What about these companies, like Amazon, announcing they will be hiring 100,000 workers to keep up with demand during this time. How will hey find those people if they can stay home and collect more? They actually might have to pay a living wage to persuade people to sign up...Oh, the agony!

No doubt, they'll probably offer bonuses that disappear when this is over instead of raising wages though.

That's a lot easier for huge companies than it is for small businesses, which are half the jobs in this country.

That's the rub. COBRA is possible but you will need to pay roughly $500 a week for an individual. The bigger problem is insurance premiums are expected to rise 20-40%. Employer based healthcare is looking to be a huge liability for businesses. Open your eyes people the system is broken.

UPS is going to lay the pipe to us on the next contract.
Any Labor person at UPS that is tired of 40% MIP
and having to pay 1/4 of their salary for insurance will be able to work as a Master Pipefitter after the next contract.

And restaurants that had to default to drive up and carry out orders to survive will be doing it a bit longer when this is over.
