Except in my experience it’s always the runners that drop out. Not the fat, old, out of shape guys that just take their time
And do the job at a steady reasonable pace.
Management loves the runners. Helps the center numbers look good.

And they can easily be replaced every couple of years when they fall apart.

AND THAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE
Yep, that's kind of where I was going with it. Most the older guys I see at my hub carry a large gallon jug with them, and I can tell they work at a controlled pace all day.

Probably the majority of our younger guys come in drinking mountain dew and eating a gas station donut. A lot of smokers, runners, hungover from the night before, etc.

I'm in my 40s and a former nutritionist and trainer and I can see a very distinct difference in lifestyles and age.
It's really not that hard....during the week this time of the year I drink nothing but water and black coffee. Drinking soda, energy drinks or anything sugary in 100 degree heat is really stupid, especially early in the day.
I don't feel like you have to be an olympic athlete or an nutritionist or anything....you just have to make small, smart decisions during the work week about what you put in your body.

“Eat well, sleep well, exercise, hydrate, stretch at home, implement stress controls, lower your bodyfat level. That is your job.“

Nope my job is to deliver packages

I disagree. If you think UPS is responsible for taking care of your own body...then you are just stupid. Just as dumb as as it is to have safety members handing out water to remind grown men and women to drink water because it’s hot. You and no one else is responsible for yourself. Don’t expect anyone to rescue you if you’re too stupid to realize that.

Where did I say that exactly?

I said it’s not my job. It’s not what I’m paid to do.

Agree 100%. No need to be in pristine shape but if you expect to have the job long,. It's your job to take care of what is going to pay your bills.

I think what he is trying to say is that it's not our job to be eat and breath UPS 24/7

Yes it is our job to come to work prepared for work but I'm sure not going to come home after a long day of work eat a salad and do some yoga.

I need a few beers to unwind after work and I always want to enjoy some unhealthy fatting food.

Dude I'm with you, but don't expect most people to know it's sugar and high glycemic carbs that'll make you obese and die from a heart attack. Most people think black coffee and eggs will give the coronary, but in reality it's the toast and orange juice that are the culprits. Try explaining that to your grandpa.

Two things came from the report, and the much more thorough article. 1. UPS doesn't give a damn how hot it is. They expect the same numbers when the heat index is 115 as they do when it's -10. The only reason they remotely give a damn is because if you were to die, they could get hit with a lawsuit. Beyond that, they wouldn't send flowers to your funeral and they'd replace you the next day. It's all about profit and production. There is zero concern for the human element, and it gets worse every year. Our center tends to give us our highest stop counts during the hottest days. It happens every summer. This past week was the hottest week of the year and I had more stops per day than I did at peak.

Secondly, it showed that our union is worthless and is just as worthless, greedy and unconcerned about us as UPS is. When the public thinks of union jobs, they think of cushy jobs where people do more laying around than work and get paid some big wage. In reality, our union job is about as close to a sweat shop as it gets in the developed world. Now, people we say we make all this money, but that's because UPS has to pay good if they expect anyone to do this job for a living. It's not because the Teamsters wanted us to get a good wage and fought UPS for it. We make a ton of money for UPS, and if we didn't, they wouldn't pay what they do.

You can argue all you want, or disagree with me, but the fact is that UPS gives zero friend** about our well-being and the union is too worried about our dues and too weak to force them to give a damn.

I'm into distribution!!
Do they know there is this stuff called water? You need to drink it when you work in the heat.

I used to think water was enough. After a few months driving in the summer heat and humidity, I learned a few Gatorades mixed in made a huge difference in battling dehydration.

I read this story yesterday and it basically says the same thing. Maybe it was more critical since he was so big, but he was young, a former high-level athlete and I'm sure had been coached many times about heat related issues. It basically says he was drinking water all day but didn't get enough electrolytes.

When people hear union employees these days they usually are talking about public employee unions, which are a whole different thing from private employer unions. And media ignores the differences.

I mix the Gatorade half and half with water. It's a little too sweet. If I drink too much water if upsets my stomach.

Gatorade is OK but mostly just sugar water.

In case you were looking for a new way to carry water....I found an RTIC gallon stainless steal vacuum insulated jug for about $50 on Amazom. Thing is amazing. I fill in 3/4 full, refrigerate it overnight, fill the rest with ice on the morning, and add a couple propel packets to it for electrolyes. I'm not even kidding that it keeps the ice until around 3pm and stays ice cold until it's gone. Best $50 ever spent.
