Just as likely, as the United States is using Ukraine for its proxy war against Russia, China is on the other end setting up a whole network of countries to devalue the dollar, while the United States was foolishly put sanctions on, everybody, making the dollar less attractive. But what would you expect? We have a fool for a president who would be stupid enough to fall into a trap like this?

Putin easily took Crimea which I think gave him a false sense of confidence on how invading the rest of Ukraine would go. If you're familiar you know the Soviets invaded Finland right before WWII and got their asses handed to them. The Finns had a plan and executed it well against a much larger invading force. With the fighting in the Donbas and after the taking of Crimea I think the Ukrainians knew they had to come up with strategies to repel an eventual Russian invasion. Keeping Ukraine out of NATO was a pretext. But no matter. We're playing a very dangerous game of chicken with a nuclear power.

Roughly two months ago, I published here on TGP a piece about how Ukrainian troops were put in an operational encirclement by the Russians in the Donbas city of Bakhmut/Artemovsk.

Russian army has always been mostly conscripts. They throw a lot of bodies at the enemy and win by sheer numbers. There has never been any doubt about Russia eventually winning. Only how much it will cost them to do so.

But this is the biggest war for Russia since WWII. Bigger than Afghanistan and that had the full weight of the Soviet Union behind it. Russia's population is about a third of the Soviet Union's without the industrial might of the Soviet Union. And corruption has siphoned off a lot of the money intended for the Russian military. The Russians put in 400,000 men against millions of Ukrainian defenders. And got mauled. If we want to know how the war is truly going since both sides are going to make claims that likely can't be trusted, watch and see if Russia uses those tactical nukes or not. If they don't things are going well enough for them. If they do use them it's because Putin won't consider losing an option. His very life may depend on winning. So if they do use the small nukes it's because they've run out of options and don't care what the world thinks.
Russia is not going to use nukes. Whether things go bad or not.
Russia is falling apart demographically. And the oil they have is in Siberia and has to be piped to refineries in Western Russia. The foreigners with the oil expertise to maintain their systems have all left. Russia is in a bad place. Don't count on desperate people to act rationally. But I hope they will be rational.
They are acting desperately now, scenario you’re suggesting is not desperation that is suicidal. China and Russia feel they can take over the United States and get rid of the dollar. This is about that just as much as anything in Ukraine.
