People eat up the Kardashians. People eat up the network evening news. People eat up Sunday NFL football.

Noam Chomsky is correct about the manufacturing of consent in this country. People have always been swayed by fairy stories that appeal to their current state of consciousness. From religion to politics and all things in between, we create our own Plato's Cave and then filter the images on the cave wall to our liking and we crush all other opinions.

Facebook is not new, just the mechanism itself that is new. When I see a news item that stands outside the norm, I look across the entire spectrum of news, rightwing/libertarian/leftwing/socialist/communist and see what is said. If I find a common thread among them all, I start paying attention. One problem we humans have is the need for instant gratification but drilling down to the core facts often takes time and vesting your own time to get to any real facts. Sometimes one just has to sit back and let time itself noodle out said facts. This can take weeks, months and more often than not, years and most people don't like that. Thus another reason most people don't like history.

One other point is a point I made earlier today with several friends as we gather one Sunday afternoon a month for lunch and the discussion of various topics on history and religion among other items. We jokingly call it our free thought church where even the profane is a topic for open discussion. You should have been there the day we discussed esoteric religious ideas and its history. That was fun and fascinating to share what we had learned and read over the years on the topic. LOL!

The subject of fake news (pro and con) came up today but it came up in the framework of both free thought and free speech. To that at the time I offered the following point:

"Free Speech and Free Thought tolerates so-called Fake News not because it agrees with the points of so-called "Fake News" but rather it believes in the freedom of the individual in thought and word, even when one thinks such word or thought is absurd!"

Without such toleration one is unable to read the POV of the fascist, the communist, socialist, the libertarian, the populist and all others in between, not to agree or disagree with them but rather to understand from their POV why they think the way they do. To me the first order of true liberty is to enjoy such a condition of free thought and free speech and if such condition is not tolerated, then the politic wing of its origin is irrelevant but the fact remains, this is true authoritarianism at its worst IMO.

As to Huxley and Orwell, they differ in Orwell saw the jackboot crushing the face of humanity while Huxley saw a kind of sleeping bliss of the masses. I think the Huxley method with its Soma to the masses has indeed won the day over the jackboot but the jackboot remains popular as a diversionary tool to the kind and gentle Soma.

Always found this interview from 1958' with Aldous Huxley to be both fascinating and instructive.
