UPS mechanics-are you Teamsters or IAM?

Yup. This job is a joke compared to any other industrial maintenance. The entrance tests are an even bigger joke. UPS PE is Mickey Mouse bull:censored2: all the way down.

Guess I should maintain the illusion for operations that what we do is magical. But I'm in a fully staffed automated hub and we can't call contractors in on repairs. Most of what we do is basic mechanical and messing with conveyors. Actual electrical troubleshooting incredibly rarely. The OP's comment that you need to be strong in PLC's is a hilarious joke, you just need to know PLC's exist. UPS has automation specialists that deal with most of the automation sadly, and they can't even see the PLC program to actually troubleshoot. If you want someone to view the program and tell you what's messed up you pass it over to the automation specialist who calls ATC/G.

No, not everyone can do this job and there are more requirements and basic knowledge required in several areas than for other jobs within UPS, but we have a guy who passed the written test by cheating with his phone. Hands on was a joke and not really even indicative of what we do day to day.

All you need to be a PE mechanic is a toolbox full of variously sized hammers and pry bars.

You seem to think very highly of your career choice.

Sure, why not. UPS PE is a joke, acting like it's hard or complicated and you're some type of badass because you have this job like the OP is laughable though. UPS asks very little and pays you just enough to make sure you never leave. If you want to collect a paycheck and retire it's a great job. If you want to find another job that pays the same or more you'll be expected to know much more.

Ok, what about a motor or belt crapping out in the middle of a sort? That has to have some stress to it.

I have considered going over to PE at some point, never been a industrial mechanic but I have over 20 years of automotive mechanical experience. What is on the test? Heard it’s a lot of electrical and the hands on is welding and stuff.

On the automotive side it’s not the actual repairing of the trucks that is hard, anybody with a few years of automotive experience can do that. What is different here at UPS is we are expected to prioritize repairs ourselves and manage a fleet, most auto techs are used to a dispatcher giving them jobs.

To be honest none of it is hard, just takes a bit of common sense and a background as a mechanic to do the job.

Worse thing I would say is an air trailer road call... lots of levels of management get in on that and are watching.

PE mechanics at UPS , all they do day and night is BANG BANG with a hammer. Difficult.

UPS machines never really break. The real reason we are here is to make the sort even more miserable.

All we do in automotive is cut holes in stuff with the torch to make you guys have to deal with fumes.

My assignment tonight is to cut rubber with the whizzer wheel during the sort
