UPS/Teamster 401k...Prudential to a Dreyfus self managed account...+22.86% for 2012

Re: UPS/Teamster 401k...Prudential to a Dreyfus self managed account...+22.86% for 20

Really?
You waste your time and energy to lose money?
I just did a quick research on, PSEC, RNO,NYCB,ECT.
Maybe, you caught a quick nickle, but you lost the dime.
Each and everyone of these stocks had high dividend yields, but each lost value by 50% of the dividend yield compared to just being in an S&P fund for a 1 yr period/2012.
Trading is just playing craps at the casino.
I wish you well, but trying to game the system is not the way to gain lasting wealth.
Wow! What do you do with your money? Stick it in a bank. Maybe a matress. Come on you can tell us.

S&P was up 16.6% from Dec30 2012-Jan4 2013, (1257 to 1466.) PSEC up 20.7% same time (9.29 to 11.22.) During that time $1.20 in Divis were paid. Thats 13% yield IN ADDITION TO THE 20.7%. 20.7% + 13% = 33.7% ROI. I could be wrong here but isn't 1/2 of 33.7% bigger than 16.6%

Realbrown1 is 100% correct. I started doing this because putting cash in a savings account is WORTHLESS currently and has been for some time now. Putting monies into a 401K or an IRA locks those monies up and they can not be touched without paying a nasty penalty. I have a 401K and the lion's share of my savings goes into it. But anyone with 1/2 a brain will have monies that are easily accessable, set aside for emergencies. Thats what this is all about!

Always working for your money and not letting your money work for you is dumb in my opinion. As far as trading being the same as playing craps and "gaming the system" please explain because where I am sitting the numbers prove otherwise.

Wed was brutal...everything was in the red except 2 stocks I own. Was nice tonight looking at Merril Edge and seeing the red box with the words, "None of your holdings are currently down in value." 11.71% up for the day (sum of all gains.)

Only 1 divi hit the account so far this month. Expecting 3 more later this month. With the $50 per week I transfer in and those divis I am looking at probably making another purchase early next month depending on what the market is doing at that time. I think its comical I get a monthly "bank deposit interest" paid to my Merrill account thats a little more than 1/2 of what I was getting when I had my money in the savings accounts doing nothing.

OHI made a huge run up in just the past month. Nice pick and nice move "ringing the register."

Satellitedriver, I don't have any experience with "funds" other than picking them from a small list at Prudential. I do not have the knowledge to feel safe investing in them as there are so many variables within them to consider. Individual stocks are easier for me so thats where I am in the broker account. Eventually I'll learn more and probably diversify into them but not now. I have thought about DHF due to the low interest rates but haven't pulled the trigger.

I truly do wish you, and all else, well with their investing for their future.
I must have given a wrong impression.
My self-managed account is resplendent with dividend stocks and has beaten the Dow and S&P by over 80% over the last five years.
I never sold a single share of stock in the last five years to achieve these gains.
My MLP dividends are 90% tax free and get reinvested.
Over all,
my whole portfolio is a self made mutual fund based on diversity of risk over time.
Here is the break down of my investing.

I am totally debt free.
I keep a two year emergency living fund in liquid assets.
My portfolio is broken down into 4 categories.
-( excluding my home and 20 acres)-,
Investment Real Estate
Growth stocks
Dividend stocks
A target date retirement mutual fund.

"this thread is for us that do"

Incorrect sentence structure, but, I get your point.
-(in that vein)-
You do that voodoo
that you do do,
so well.
Time will tell
how it smells.

Best of Luck.

I am a flawed man who tries to do good.

We are in total agreement
when it comes to Charitable giving.
be it time, or money.

Money means one thing to me, security.
The fancy new cool thing, of the day, means little to me.
I give monthly to five charities and I feel bad that I do not give more.

I am the ant in Aesop's fable.

brownboy, I am surprised that a financial whiz such as yourself does not realize that, generally speaking, you tend to lose money when you work 8 or more hours of OT in a week.

I don't exactly follow unless you are reffering to decreased productivity, that I know very well. Kinda hard to lose money with OT when its paid at time and a half. We lose in many other ways with forced OT (we knew this going into the job though) but monetarily I don't see it as losing money.

Please explain, I do appreciate different perspectives.

It's called taxes---generally when you work 8 or more hours of OT in a week the government takes a bigger bite of your paycheck.

I didn't think there was a difference is tax rate for regular pay vs. overtime percentage wise and did not know there was an 8 OT hour "threshold".?.?

Bonus is slightly different. I have to keep reminding my fellow drivers who grumble about this. Any bonus paid is taxed at 35% at the time of pay. When you do your taxes you get back the difference between the 35% and what your individual rate is (17% in my case.) I get bonus at least once a week claim 1+ my actual deductions and still get a nice check back from the Fed every year.

Re: UPS/Teamster 401k...Prudential to a Dreyfus self managed account...+22.86% for 20

Nice numbers BBU. Looking at asia market now I think Monday should be a good day here. I was down .23% for the last week.

OK, now I want to talk a little philosophy. There is a group within DGI circles who advocate to once a year sweep your gains and re-alocate. They advocate one to compile a list of divi champions sell the current holdings that are not on the new list and buy from the list. You are heavy in the financial segments, a bank, Mreits, BDC's, an MLP plus 1 telecom (please do not think I am passing judgement, I myself am almost purely in the financial segments +1 MLP and 1 speculative buy.) Any desire on your part to diversify more or keep riding the Fed's low interest rate policy? Do you keep a list of your own Divi Champions?

yes the AI/NYMT/PNNT and PSEC are in my portfolio because of interest rates...their high yield is because of interest rates...cashing in while
rates are at historic lows...also i bought back in November when the market sold off because everyone thought dividend taxes were going back
to the Clinton era rates 39.5%....Obama went from 15% to 20%...then everyone started buying dividend stocks and haven't stopped...no list
dividend champs...i do this by how i feel on any given day...i trust myself...as the market (fed) changes i will try to stay ahead of the changes and
keep cashing in...not good being in 1 sector...high risk/high reward...picking some other sectors to be in is better...portfolio will be more stable...i
had no idea OHI (healthcare) would take off but because i chose to pick some other sectors it paid off...i don't think u r passing judgement by asking
me stock questions...like passing on what i know...DGI...no idea about that stuff...i don't read how others make money...i just trust my judgement and
so far i'm doing better than most of the experts

Michigan leads at halftime...Louisville wins game (my 2 cents)

RNO...+.45 points today (+$1,668.15) 401K...up 1.75% (think now over 14% and 17k YTD)
RNO 600 shares in Scottrade account (+$275)

I expect RNO to go over $16 just before ex date...my advice...u are going to make more money
as the stock rises...i'm selling before the dividend because the stock is going to collapse after
the ex date...exit the stock and have more to buy again...stock will not go higher after the ex date

coal is hated...we can keep cashing in doing it this way
