2004 Acura TL, 16 miles but at 4:30 in the morning, it feels like alot more.

EAMKing, I can relate to your start time. I leave my house at 5:30 AM, no traffic jams on my 26 mile commute. I am surprised at how many people are out on the road though. Usually everybody leaves home about 7 AM around here and it get gridlocked. I get off at 5PM, so I get caught in it going home. My current vehicle is a 2002 Chevy S-10, 105K miles on it with the original tires. Don't laugh, its paid for!

I like Browniehound's comments about how we waste so much fuel. I haven't bought anything with a V8 in it since 1976. I don't have a boat or camper to pull so I have no need for it. I bought a 2008 Ford Escape a few months ago to replace our Chevy Trailblazer because of the price of gas. Our two sons are off to college so its just the two of us now. I test drove the Escape Hybrid, but the extra price and insurance cost would have cost me more in the long run. I squeeze 28 MPG highway out of the 3.0L V6 compared to the hybrid's 30 MPG.

I live in a county that is a suburb of Atlanta, and we don't have good public transportation to get around on. We have county van pools and limited bus service, but no subways or direct bus routes to get around on. And there is no way I would want to move to the area I work in.

"Little tap on the starter (original), and away we went."

Gotta love a girl who knows where the starter is.

Funny, Tooner I had the same thing happen yesterday with my F150 but the hammer didn't work. It's 6 degrees right now, and I'm heading out to pull it.

You didnt hit it hard enough...............
If I cant fix it with a hammer and duct tape, or if the wrinkles in my clothes dont come out in the dryer, it goes in the trash.

My 98 has had a problem since day 1, had it to the dealer 3 times. Sometimes it thinks someone is stealing it...........that someone would be me. It has a thing called passlock system. Dealer said leave it here, coz we cant fix it til it does it here, but that wouldnt work as I had to have a vehicle. And it could be 6 months before it does it, then what......So one day I was trying to go to Delaware, wouldnt start for 5 hrs, you can hear it try but fuel shuts off. I was so mad,
I slammed the tilt, and it started, so for 200k miles plus...you must turn on the key, wait for all the bells and whistles and fuel pump to finish cycling, then start it. Being a UPS driver, I jump in and turn the key, while belting in, and it thinks Im stealing it again. and then I have to slam the wheel, hold it down, wait for everything to cycle, then wait 10 minutes, slam wheel, then wait , then VROOM. Very hard to get used to not starting it like I do while working. And it was about 6 here too, this week has been sheer horror.

The simple mechanical rule I live by is;
Duct tape is to make things stop.
WD-40 is to make things go.
A hammer is what you use to beat something into the shape you want.
A knife is to cut away what you don't need.
The cold weather I can't help you with,
I was raised on the Gulf Coast of Texas.

Ain't that the truth about putting clothes in the dryer. I don't know off hand where my ironing board is and I for darn sure instructed all my kids in the "put it in the dryer with a wet washcloth if you want to get the wrinkles out because I don't have time to iron for you right now." I sure remember my mom with the old glass ketchup bottle with the sprinkler top on it to dampen the clothes she had to iron with the stack of clothes by her side in the laundry basket.
Can we say "tanagent." Oh... and LOL.

Oh boy. It's all a big conspiracy right? Watch out for those big evil Democrats, they're gonna get ya! Wow.
That is my opinion on it. They want us to be more and more dependent on them for everything. Obama is proposing billions of our tax dollars for a program that will "assist individuals who purchased homes that are simply too expensive for their income levels…”. Why don't we all go out and buy huge homes and when we can't make the payments have the federal govrenment bail us out?

Nice! A Han Solo Quote...LOL. I drive 1/4 mile roundtrip in a 2007 VW Passat V6. Before anyone says anything after doing 160+ stops each day I have trouble making it to the parking lot.:knockedout:

I've outrun the law, not the local fat sheriffs mind you, I'm the talking the big Virginia State Troopers. She's fast enough for you old man

I agree with you on that. That bailout pissed me off when I heard it. I payed 8.25% on my condo for four years back in the late ninties early 2000's. These losers can't handle 6%. They shouln't be in the damn house then.
But I ask you this. How about the $400 billion we have spent in Iraq? That could have bailed out Social Security while we transitioned it into something much better than it is. Or medicare, or used it to further alternative energys/fuels. Or national healthcare or fixed the immigration problem.....should I stop? All I know is that when Bush took office, this country was extremely close to paying off it's deficit. We are now on the brink of never being able to get back to 0. I'm ashamed of how we look in the global camera eye. We are nearly all alone on an island now, and no one who is an island can survive for long alone. Peace, we are both American, just with different opinions.

Actually I don't agree with a lot of what GWB does. We should have been able to get into Iraq, get the job done, and hand over control to the Iraqi people with advisement. We are basically acting as their police force which is not why we went over there. Alternative fuels? How about if we drill our own oil instead of buying it from abroad? National healthcare? You mean socialist healthcare? We need to stop all the frivolous lawsuits and audit the charges that hospitals pull over on insurance companies. One hospital charged $6 for flu shots if you paid cash, but billed $22 if you had insurance. I wonder why our premiums are so high. Immigration...I agree that it is a major problem. I thought Bush was trying to fund the building of a fence along the Mexican border?

IMO I might just write in Ron Paul in November because I don't like McCain, and would rather kiss a spitting cobra than vote for Obama or Hillary.

Let me be the first to say great post my friend. You are open minded and very informed. It took alot of b_lls to post something like that here on a site where many of the drivers have pickups or suvs that drink gas like it is free. Yes, we are in trouble, but there are many solutions as you well know. Wind, Solar, Hydrogen and yes even some Nuclear solutions will help. Check out hydrogen fuel cell's for automotive use. Honda and BMW have allready mastered the technology. They need high production numbers to bring the astronomical price tags down but it is coming. For anyone who wants a glimpse of the future, check out the Honda FCX Clarity. The future is now, push for it, support it and those in government/politics that embrace the need for global environmental responsibility. We have a small window to work with, but we have to move more quickly to change. Peace out.

FAVRE,
Thanks for your supportive post. I've scratched the surface on learning future technologies in regards to energy. What I've gleaned from a short period of research is that any technology close to market is not cost-effective(I'm sure this will change as the supply of oil decreases) or pollutes the environment that same or more than what we do today.

Which brings me to this point. The Toyota Prius gets 60/mi (or so) per gallon, reducing its carbon "footprint" on the planet. But my understanding is, in creating the hybrid-electric engine, the process creates a greater carbon footprint on the planet than a regular gasoline engine. I'm not very educated on this matter, so if somebody knows more or is an expert please enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

Haven't heard that one. I'm sure the study was funded by Gm, Ford and Chrysler. It's getting beyond desperation now for them. I hope GM can survive and thrive along with Honda and Toyota for the sake of all the good men and women who have their lives at stake with those jobs. I'm pulling for GM but after years of driving garbage cars made by them, I switched to Honda 3 yrs ago. Perfect car.

Browniehound, I'm not claiming to be an expert, but the big problem with the current hybrid electric/gas cars is the battery. A few months ago, I looked into buying a Ford Escape Hybrid, but the supply was running out and they would not take any orders. The company building that suitcase size 330 volt battery that is under the rear floorboard can't keep up with production on them. My brother works at a GM plant where they used to build the Chevy S-10 pickups. They had an experimental all electric version that would spin the front wheels it was so fast. But the bed was full of batteries and it would only get about fifty miles on a charge. My local power company, Georgia Power, actually put a few of these in their fleet, but they were deemed too impractical and discontinued them. Somehow, Toyota has managed to build a sufficient number of these drive trains to put a lot of Priuses on the road. The carbon footprint you are referring to is the amount of energy it takes to build the batteries. This technology, along with the hydrogen fuel cells, will improve with time and mass production will bring down the cost. I'm all for nuclear energy too, we need to start right now building more plants to keep up with energy demands.
