Slow & steady wins the race.
Two fixes for these situations that drivers just don't use........... 8 hour guarantee and 9.5 grievances. When they cut routes exercise your 8 hour guarantee instead of running out the door and they will have to put more routes in. Filing 9.5 grievances will force them to reduce your dispatch at least 3 days a week. The contract only helps you if you enforce it.
You couldn't be more wrong. UPS has figured out that paying the 2 hour penalty pay for failing to reduce dispatch to 8 hours (only after the driver grieves it) is cheaper than adding more routes. It is also cheaper for them to pay drivers triple time for a few hours each week (again only after the grievance procedure) than adding more drivers and routes. There are stacks of 9.5 grievances handed in each week in our center and it's been that way for the past 2 or 3 months.
It was the same situation last summer also. We finally got paid for our grievances in the fall, but only after our summers were ruined and our bodies beaten down.

How many drivers do you have walking out the door every day instead of insisting on working?

RLO's (requested lay-offs) are what really make it possible for them to cut routes out every day. Also, how many causal drivers are working while FT drivers are going home?

At the moment, none

I don't know what a causal driver is. All of our drivers are full time. We are short on drivers now because of guys who have left due to retirement, illness, worker's comp, termination, etc. When volume is up and routes are not cut, then drivers from other centers are brought in to fill the voids.

RLO`s keep junior drivers in feeder. You get five drivers to take a day off a week and thats work for a driver that would have had to go back to package car.
