To answer the OP, I believe that sometimes the wife comes on because they are trying to confirm what the husband is saying(as in the case of the wife whose husband stole the video game).

What's the big deal whether it's the wife or the hubby? The wife has a stake in knowing about the job, the hours, and if that paycheck is secure or not.
