Working through your lunch break

Like sober always said: It's UPS's business model to try and get drivers to work through as much of their lunch as they can.
Consider this:
1.Leaving the building late with way to much work- gets the driver to work faster and give up most or all of their lunch; Think it's coincidence that it always happens on Fridays? Our Orion computer doesn't even show spaces for lunch.
2. No more safe driving awards, or years of service awards- saves money.
3. No more turkeys- saves money.
4. No more Founders day gifts, and the budget for food is like 87 cents per employee- saves money.
5. Constant shaving of time studies to make drivers think they need to work faster-saves money?
How about we shave, or cut the IE department to save money? How about we put impossible demands, longer hours, and more work for them to do, and then pile on more. How about we dictate that they should "punch out to use the restroom", and make them grab a handrail and push a button every time they change screens on a computer, and give them the biggest piece of crap office chair to use for 12 hours a day?
I hope that UPS realizes that they are close to critical velocity on cutting from employees and asking more from us. There aint to much more to cut and there aint too much more time for us to work in a day.

Excellent post by the way.
But dont forget...tell them what a piece of crap they are before sending them out on the road to work safe, while spitting nails. Because a pissed off driver works faster. Oh the loads were late, so shave your lunch and breaks or skip them altogether, thats what they want. So we can make service. You wont get any accolades for getting it done regardless of the reason the system is behind. But you will, fact jack, get fired for cutting a corner if something happens. if nothing happens they expect you to take the risk again. Slow down make the money, be happy, dont steal time, dont have an accident, enjoy the little free time you have, and leave on your terms! Make them enjoy their rules. By following them. lunch between 3rd and 6th hour, no matter whats behind the bulkhead door.

in the olden days, lol, when there was a true emergency aka storm, power outage, terrorist attack, fire, we all stepped up and got it done, no questions asked. and we were thanked. And we were proud to do it. The caliber of people who seem to come to work for UPS are bar none the best. The majority. But as of when I left jan 2017, every day is a snowstorm. An unrelenting never ending snowstorm all....year....long. Good luck to all.

Nobody is going to fire them for skipping lunch. That is what they want.
we have had a driver get fired for "Working" during their lunch. that is what I meant.

what they would do was punch out for their meal , work thru it, then punch back on duty after their meal. supe would follow them around for 3-4 days seeing them do this.

he was fired for what wally said, "falsifying" their time card. One guy got his job back for some reason the other one was GONE for good. he may have been warned several times. or maybe he was a trouble maker.

i believe the co. is really cracking down on this because we all did it for years in feeder during snow storms and such . they told me it was a liability issue. some driver crashed into a 4 wheeler and injured or killed someone and he was punched off duty on his meal and breaks.

the co. had to pay out 4 million dollars.

Not many people go by Orion... so why would you follow it's prediction on your lunch? Take your lunch when it best suits you/your route. If you're done with businesses at noon and are hungry, eat then before starting resis. If you want to get done with most of the work before you get into the last 2 or 3 neighborhoods, then so be it. Just don't try to take your lunch at the end of the shift in the center because it'll more than likely cause you to get sent out because they see you sitting for an hour.... lesson learned on that one.
We can't be sent back out once we are on the lot.

Have seen 3 people fired for that. But that was over 10 years ago.

I think an hour lunch is totally unreasonable yet they try to force us where I'm at. I absolutely can not stop between the 3rd and 5th hour as our local dictates to take a lunch. My anxiety is simply too high to possibly consider eating that early in the day. I stop at the end to take a half hour dinner break or maybe an hour if my dispatch was reasonable that day.

If they decide to screw me by making me help someone before I get to take a lunch aka dinner I either take nothing and record nothing or just take a few minutes.

I can and will work 10 to 11 hours and not eat because I can't eat until that truck is empty of deliveries.

Dude really you can't take a lunch because you didn't have a reasonable dispatch. I take my lunch around 12-1 everyday regardless of dispatch. If you keep giving ups your lunch it will be a long career for you.

#1 is pure paranoia because whatever we'd gain from you in production we've lost 10x with the late Air
#2 is also paranoia because in general the only allowances that have been shaved were valet stops or other places we found the drivers were falsifying the :censored2: out of their work to run up huge plan days

There's the other side of the coin. Ups thinks that they can do all that, and we won't even realize what they are doing because we are "too dense".
Been here 31 years, and never heard of "valet stops".
Please list other example where drivers "cheat", because that's an old song too. I'm positive there are bad apples out there, but 99.9 percent of the people I know just want to do their job and go home. Lack of trust must be one of the first things taught at SBTS; except for IE. Why is it that they are never questioned, and everything from them is gospel law?

There was a point brought up here that UPS is having a hard time retaining employees. Turnover is pretty noticeable among drivers here in my area. Same goes for management. Especially in a major metropolitan city if you factor in cost of living, our salary is really not as much as people think it is. Trainees quitting, 10% of the workforce out on disability, calling off sick, etc.

Top it of with unrealistic production standards that are being applied in congested areas and archaic management, drivers are dropping left and right.

No one is coming in here with some fresh ideas on how to motivate people and it's really sad.
