Our DM gave the PCM this morning while our center manager played on his cell phone. He basically begged us to come in either Saturday or Sunday saying the forecast for next week was a disaster. All I heard was crickets. Poor staffing and manning on their end doesn't lead to a crisis on our end.

One of our ops specialists (fancy title right?) straight up said today, they say they can forecast 6 days out. Truth is, they make forecasts that are more wrong than the weather man. We're expecting to be hit hard Monday, but the forecast is still iffy on if we will see the volume. I did 190 yesterday and was up to 250 today, if it goes up tomorrow again, the trend would suggest it's coming.

Peak day has been predicted to be Tuesday the 22nd for a while.

I don't even look at those forecasts anymore. They're wrong more than they're right. You end up having to use your gut. And I'm not even kidding. On Black Friday our plan was off by 300%.

A couple years before I retired, I was talking to one of my supes (the one retiring this year) about how bad the forecasts were. My point was, that with all the internet based shipping, we should know just about down to the box how much volume was coming in.

He told me that back when he started (not long after I did), they used a formula based on last year's daily volume with some other variables (economic, voodoo?) tossed in, and they hit it almost every day.

He actually showed me for the next few days his forecast compared to the PAS/EDD forecast. Guess which was closer to actual.

Just found out we are working Sunday. Mandatory. No sign up list, its all hands on deck. I am fine with it. Working Sunday is preferable to working 14 hours on Christmas Eve and/or having to come in on Saturday the 26th to clean up the mess. Bring it on baby!!!

I've asked our management team, and none of them have heard anything about working Sunday. Maybe our center is just doing that well this peak. Maybe they have their heads in the sand. *shrug*

No talk of weekend work here. I sure can't work Saturday I won't have meaningful hours.

I would think something as unusual as working Sunday (never happened here in my ten years) would have been mentioned by now.

I'm not sure if working Sunday means that we won't be screwed on Christmas Eve. Our Christmas Eve volume will be from customer orders Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.

I'm beginning to think this Sunday thing is do ups can say "we did everything we could" in the event of a major fail next week.

Yeah prbly that and they want to free up trailers so they can advance loads. You will notice 2 day air getting delivered a day early (that is if you ordered stuff).

Christmas Eve I will get a normal dispatch with atleast 2 waves of air shuttled out. My sup will still act confused when I laugh as he asks "will you be back by 1700?".... lol what joke.

Working Sunday means (for me at least) that I will be running out of hours on Christmas Eve.
