I am curious as to how long it takes to transfer to a new station after signing the offer letter?
And if the station is out of state, do they give you extra time to move??

    Thanks

You are usually given 30 days. Your old station can't keep you longer than 30 days.

You don't get extra time to move the way you are asking. The times I've moved state to state I usually ask to take a vacation week early or ask to take LWOP.

They ship you Ground. Best of luck!

Since transfers are voluntary, are those who transfer able to write off the expenses for the move on their tax return?

Yes, but the move has to be over a certain number of miles. I can't remember what they are. I've claimed it multiple times.

@UpstateNYUPSer brought up a good point. Make sure you keep your moving receipts for tax purposes and find out what the magic mileage number is.

It's 50 miles but that is for either a new job or relocation dictated by your employer. Transfers would be voluntary and may/may not qualify for the tax write off.

According to multiple accountants I've used, it is.
