It doesn't matter who she picked. McConnell has already decided Trump is innocent...before the trial. Actively working with Team Trump to get Orange Man off the hook as quickly as possible.
In other words, completely rigged, with no witnesses because Republican won't allow them. Again, Trump was allowed to have witnesses at the impeachment hearings, but they were barred from testifying.
The only witnesses the GOP wanted were The Bidens, which wasn't going to happen.

Kurt Volker and Tim Morrison were requested by Republicans. You might be confused because their testimony was also damning of the President and his corrupt actions.
Beyond Turley, who was one of the four Constitutional scholars called to give their opinion, there weren't any other witnesses allowed. That in spite being told by Schiff and Nadler that the Republicans would get their turn. Didn't happen.

So they can maintain the talking point of not hearing from people with direct knowledge of what the President said. Why doesn’t Trump testify? Should be easy to talk about a perfect phone call.
