that was performed by the mechanic. If the truck is trouble free, the book could go for days or weeks with no new signatures.

This is what we were told. Ups is free to set stricter guidelines than the DOT from area to area. In the event of an on area DOT stop, does the DOT no longer check the DVIR to verify the pretrip?

This is untrue. You must fill out the DVIR on a daily basis. The only change is that you do not have to turn in the yellow copy if there is nothing wrong with the car.
