Brown Cafe Warning

Why worry? paranoia never hurt anyone but unless you have something to worry about, why would you care?
They can also use the ip address of another computer. So all of a sudden, it looks like you're surfing child porn between bomb making sites while supporting al qaeda. There's identity theft. They can get your street address using IP Locator. Anyone running target net software can see surfers ip addresses. I'm not sure how it works or when exactly this info becomes available, but i've seen it's not possible to extract it from a post u make here unless the administrator releases it (or they hack the site). Any website you go to records the address, which is like a road map right to your life. Granted you only have to worry about the people looking for directions, but that's a scary thought if you wonder why they might want it. It's not always about keeping the skeletons in your closet hidden, it's also about acknowledging the need for responsible internet security. I just learned all this in 10 minutes of surfing, so if it's wrong feel free to correct it.

Basically, when you use a hider, it routes your traffic thru another location. I just started a progam that as of a minute ago was running my traffic thru a proxy in thailand. It tests and routes thru various proxies worldwide. When I clicked on my google bookmark, it came up in thai languange lol. So (as I understand it) when someone sees my ip, they see the ip of the proxy and not my own.

I've noticed a bit of a slowdown in download speed, but only slightly. It's running a 1.47 second ping right now. I'm on the trial version, it's easy to use, just down load it and run it. Runs in the background, nothing for me to do other than run it. The trial version isn't guaranteed because it runs thru a public proxy. The pay version is only $30 and runs thru a private proxy so it's guaranteed That's a small price to pay for a little bit more peace of mind.

You are probaly correct Canon. I dont know that much about the internet as I only use it for simple things, I cant even get my fax to work. I usually just blame it on dial up, much easier than admitting defeat against a machine. I guess I just feel that Im safe, until Im not. Ive been on for quite some time and so far so good. Maybe Im just lucky.
I had my identity stolen off of my drivers license, and I still cant figure that one out. They were passing bad checks using my dl#, and when I went to pay for a bunch of presents at Christmas one year, they hauled me in the back room. Had to call some number and confirm my name was not Daryll, hadnt shopped at a krogers in 15yrs, and still cannot figure out how someone got my dl #. Ususally if they write the # on your check, they want to see the license? So my day of shopping got wrecked, couldnt cash a check for weeks, but it did get straightened out. I can only imagine the nightmare if they got hold of the rest of your personal info.

I believe that you have to be your own registered isp from your house for net locator to find your address. Not many people do that. If they do they are probably tech savy enough not to care, unless they're serving kiddie porn or doing something illegal.

There are thousands of free public proxy servers if you've suddenly gotten worried about someone like me, because I can see your ip. Firefox has freeware proxy plug ins, IE probably does too. If you're into anything illegal then law enforcement can still track you through your proxy server. Remember that you're still leaving an ip trail, it's just got one more computer in it.

It's not you i'm worried about, just the internet in general. All this discussion of being less annonymous than previously thought begs the question of overall security. You seem nice and are much more helpful/interactive than you find with most administrators on other forums. But, in reality, for all I know you could be the real killer of OJ Simpson's wife.

Interesting tangent... as an administrator, does it bother you if people use an IP hider?

That's the problem with the public proxy servers I read... you don't know what kind of service you're being routed thru. With the pay one, they guarantee their server is fully anonymous and non-logging.

Under the best annonymity, mine claims:
The proxy server does not send your IP address to the target host. Nor does it identify itself as a proxy. The target host is unable to determine your IP address. It is also unable to determine that you are using a proxy.

You get what you pay for I suppose. I'm not convinced I'm behind the iron wall now, but I do feel like I have at least a taller hurdle for someone to clear before reaching me.

You're right, not many of the people that use the internet actually know me :batman:

What you do on the internet is your own business, not mine. The kind of service provider you use doesn't matter to me in the slightest, use 3 of them stacked on top of each other if you're really worried about being tracked. Keep illegal, unethical or immoral content out of your posts here and we'll all get along just fine.

I understand the illegal stuff, but we can't post anything unethical or immoral either?? Aww man. That's draconian. If I were a Democrat I would feel discrimated against.

The only thing you need to be an internet expert is Google.

There are websites which show you your ip address when you log on. They also detect proxy servers etc. To illustrate what it looks like when you're running thru a proxy, this is the info I just saw for myself:
My IP Information
IP Information

IP Address: 130.92.70.251
Hostname: planetlab01.cnds.unibe.ch
Blacklist Status: Clear
Remote Port: 57175
Protocol: HTTP/1.0
Connection: keep-alive
Keep Alive:
Location

Country: Switzerland (CH)
Region: Bern
City: Bern
ISP: University Of Berne
Proxy

Proxy Type: None / Highly Anonymous
User Agent

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/418.9.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/419.3

Interesting stuff... maybe I'll try to get a job in the IT dept now. And as I just found out, some public proxys don't support CoDeeN or something? Couldn't post or preview post so had to switch back to private proxy which does httm and httml or something like that. I'm just a dumb truck driver from Switzerland, what do i know.

Lakeland, I don't know who is dumber. Me or you? You for thinking the DIAD has any connection to the package car. It doesn't even get its power source from the truck. Or me for thinking for a second that you would actually believe DIAD4 can run diagnostics on a package car???????????

not the diad itself but I have also heard they will be putting monitoring equipment in the trucks. Either its relayed to the DIAD (highly unlikely, not even sure if its possible) or stored somewhere else, but it is a very real concern for a lot of people.

I know I know if you're doing your job right you'll have nothing to hide, its just if you even make one mistake like say forget to put the DIAD in the charger (then they figure if its not in there you MUST be using it while driving or whatever), supposedly they're going to know and keep track.

It could be a lot of garbage (probably is) but the rumors were circulating around here as well

Using Bluetooth (DIAD 4 has a Bluetooth radio in it), monitoring equipment would be able to pass information to and from DIAD.

see I didn't know the DIAD has that lol, but yes now that you mention it, so equipped it could do just that.

This DIAD IV sounds like it has a lot of technology packed into it.
