Chicago Seems to be Doing Well

Old Man Jingles

Rat out of a cage
You’re one of those that believes the civil rights movement was peaceful, aren’t you?
Hell no!
I marched in several in Atlanta ... no way in my hometown ... Whites would have killed me.
Like I replied to another post ... maybe yours or @Turdferguson ... I'm more scared of White people than Black people.
I played with and grew up with Black kids as friends ... one of the advantages of growing up with Blind parents.
They had Blind Black friends as well ... they really had it bad. People in my hometown didn't like Blind people either.
Churches were a blessing.

Nope. Ready to see it all go up in flames. Have to be. Cuz it’s not all about me.
So get this. My nieces are half black and it’s beautifully obvious. To meet all three of my kids, you’d never guess they were a quarter black. So am I just supposed to sit back and be happy that my kids won’t have that initial discrimination by society? Because we all say it’s wrong and we all know it happens. When and how do we fix it? How deep does it run and what’s it going to take to keep a sustained and effective campaign of change going on? Does every city have to go up in flames? Ok. If that’s what it takes because the civil right movement was 56 years ago and we have a long way to go.

Thank God President Trump is such a unifying force!
You guys never consider the fact that in much of the country in the 50's it was illegal if not downright dangerous to intermarry. Just showing a white woman attention could get a black man killed. Now there are interracial couples everywhere and most people don't think about it at all. Things have changed. Most interactions with police don't end in violence and the relative few that do are almost always a failure to comply with a lawful order. Not saying there isn't racism anywhere but I don't believe for a second that you are constantly being put through racist situations. It's just not reasonable to put it all on the White man and not acknowledge the systemic problems in the black community. Cities like Baltimore, NYC, and Washington are spending a lot of money per student yet proficiency in math and across the board is very low. Most black babies are born to single mothers. Violence is pervasive in large cities with large black populations. I do see blacks who work hard to get an education do well for themselves. Why aren't they being treated badly? Immigrants come here and succeed. So why is the black population doing so poorly? You don't want to believe it but it's liberal policies that have lead to dependency and black leadership creating a pervasive mindset that blacks can't succeed because everything is stacked against you. As long as that persists there's really nothing whites can do to help because you sincerely believe we're out to harm you. And I think you personally ought to be able to see this because you're doing well for yourself and your family. I wish there was some secret white handshake that would've opened doors for me but my whiteness hasn't done much for me. But I'm content with the little I have. Too many people seem to think that if they aren't living the wealthy life they see on tv they're getting screwed and in the case of blacks it's due to racism. If you're eating well, have a roof over your head, clothes to wear, a car to drive, you're already doing better than much of the world. I know I'm talking to a brick wall and opening myself up to ridicule, just giving my two cents.

Hmmm. Look at that. I’m guessing violence sells. It gets attention. And you think the violence is a bad thing? Or is it that y’all are ok with the :censored2:s when they’re well spoken and polite about reforms that are never gonna happen?

Do all you internet historians that now know about MLK know anything about Malcom X?
Saw the movie. Learned a lot. He was killed by black Muslims.

You have to ask yourself, are we a melting pot, or a patchwork quilt? I think ideas like "black community" reveal the heart of the issue. We see government enforced segregation as evil, but when it is self-imposed by a minority group, it is encouraged? I don't know, just spit-ballin'. BLM seemingly wants police budgets slashed and that money invested in black communities. The leaders of BLM disavow and insult prior generation civil-rights activists for trying to bridge the gap between black and white. All I can think of is that sounds like self-imposed segregation.

It seems to me that waiting for, and then demanding, government to fix a problem isn't going to work. You want community policing through cooperative action? Who's stopping you? Take the lead, get it done. Do positive things, show how well they work, then ask for investment.

Better yet, stop seeing the world as black and white, start seeing yourself as.a fellow American. Let's talk about "our communities" instead of black or white or asian or hispanic communities. Multiculturalism is doomed to failure, life is difficult enough as it is when you are disconnected from the people around you by cultural differences. We need an agreed upon set of values to enable understanding and unity within our nation.

That's not to say that we can't have our own personal, familial, or community values. But we need an overarching set of values that are understood and accepted by all. Those values need to include acceptance of the fact of differing views (not acceptance of the views themselves), recognition of the rights of all individuals, equal protection under the law (really equal, not "protected class" equal), and a deeply held conviction that your rights end where my nose begins. Anything short of those basic fundamentals is aimed at dividing, not uniting. Just my two cents.
