I say absolutely yes! Fed-Ex makes a comparable wage and look what they do! Their trucks are empty and I'm delivering 350-400/day. Fed-Ex Ground is doing half that and in 4 times the area. Hence the statement from my Fed-Ex Ground buddy "I see four UPS drivers on my route" (and he knows their names).
I could write on and on about all the things the UPS driver does and is held accountable for i.e. getting sales leads (doing B.D.'s job) or doing/fixing the preloader's job but I will simplify it to one thing and hope it makes my point. When a new-hire is put on a route its with a sup. for 4 full days and a couple of half days with 6 hours of work. If it was truly mindless labor the sup. could go out for one day and then the driver would have a normal dispatch the next day. I mean how hard is it? All we do is deliver boxes. Right?
Do you think the bread guy or milk man gets a 4 day train?
I hope I made my point. Maybe everyone else can add another thing the UPS driver has to do. I'll start with this: here is your over-dispatched industrial route but you can't deliver (sheet as closed) from 12-1 or after 5. Who came up with the 12-1 thing anyway?
