It wasn't. I'm pretty sure that the phrase was first used by Roman Gladiators addressing Caesar in the colosseum:
"We who are about to die salute you".
They were actually making a greater sacrifice than your efforts on behalf of your emperor.
You have to admit flip flop Fred is pretty accurate? He was Hoffa buddy and then when Jimmy wouldn't make him a IBT Vice President he went to the other side.
