We had a second generation Cuban American whose parents fled Castro’s Cuba working as an office aid. I showed her the paper and she was disgusted, like Castro was a horrible man.

Not defending the guy, but I thought this part of Castro history is interesting... he helped Native American groups gain federal recognition/protection by recognizing them internationally. This usually put pressure on US government to do so despite being reluctant at first. Again, not defending Castro as he he committed vast crimes for which he never payed for, but Native Americans view him a bit differently for all his efforts for them.
