Calling all chevy guys.
I know this is the wrong forum, Oh well shoot me.
I backed in my driveway tonight in 4x4 and I heard something zing, and I lost reverse. The shifter for 4x4 jumped outta gear. I have all 4 forward gears, in 2x4 and 4x4. No weird noise, nothing leaking, no burnt tranny smell. Its a silverado.
I have a few questions. will it make it a while if I just dont get myself into a position where I have to back, How do I check the fluid level, could it just be linkage, or a cable.
I have to be back at the hospital in the am, and of course it is saturday so most likely I cant get it fixed. My husband is in the hospital with a heart problem so I cannot ask him, so any help any of you motor heads could give me is appreciated.

There shuold be a transmission dipstick located to the rear of the engine. You have to check it with the engine running. Before you do that smell the dipstick- it shouldn't smell burnt. My son drove his car for over a year with no reverse but it takes patients to find a spot where you won't get block in. Transmissions are EXPENSIVE to work on--good luck

The tranny dipstick should have a red handle instead the yellow for oil, yea itd be expensive to work on but Id say since its isolated to the reverse gear and not slippage between the forward gears it should be a relatively cheaper repair

We need to start a thread for all the hurts and ills of the people and their families on here. Funny how while posting, you'll find out that someone's loved one is in the hospital or worse. Come on people, we're not only off duty and retired UPS'ers, we're your back up support network.

As long as you`re not hearing any grinding or crunching sound you`ll probably be ok for a while. Just check the fluid,it`s possible that it`s really low and not building enough pressure.

i have looked at the sun shell thing, sounds accurate. i dont care about what happens i just want to get there. If it blows up and I get there so be it. If Im not there he is so out of it, he wont know what the doctors say. I only came home coz my dog sitters broke down and couldnt get there, and our dogs are his babies. This just really sucks. Chevy will get me there.

I would suggest checking that your halogen fluid is filled to the fill line.

Or your clutch belt could be loose

and while you're doing some maintenance you may as well check your blinker fluid.
