I think it was to show support for the war. There was a lot of WW 2 and Korean war veterans that did not want to be identified as anti war draft dodgers.

Not really, at that time it was the south that was still strongly democratic and republicans were still fairly strong in the northeast. I know plenty of union members who are republican.

Historically people such as Eugene Debbs and Emma Goldman found a bigger audience from the working class in the north.

Be careful putting labels on people. Usually the issues are much more complicated. Kennedy and Johnson were staunch anti communist but it was Nixon that opened the door to red China and detente with the Soviet Union.

ok so when we go to negotiate a contract, there's stuff we want from UPS like pay, respectful treatment, pension funding, healthcare. and it's pulling teeth on every single point. right? if healthcare is removed from the list of things we need from UPS, then we can use the bargaining power we would need to put into that to get more pay, pension, and better work conditions? i mean doesn't workers not being guaranteed healthcare benefit management more, because it's then a carrot they can use against us?
