General rule I tell new hires is that during your 30 days you don't have a lunch, it belongs to UPS. The way I normally recommend is start your day as normal and just start delivering. The first time you can't find a package, code out ten minutes to look and sort the truck. Setup say maybe the next 15-20 stops, stop for stop. Rinse and repeat. At some point, maybe after the first 4 shelves are done, I might code out 20 minutes and sort the rest of the whole truck. With it being summer, park under a tree if you can, and keep the rear door open while you do it. You got the next 25 years to take a full hour if you want, so you just suck it up to get through your 30. We had a guy struggling at the same time I was doing my 30. Explained this to him. He was all "eff that, we are supposed to get a lunch" so he would sit at his GF's on route for an hour each day. Guess who failed to qualify?

They said it was because of the lunch issue but sis they gone being him back peak an allow him to re start his qualification. Which the BA said that's management just beefing up for peak to insure man power . center manger told him to do Saturday air sign bid for cover until they bring him back after July 30 "free season" where you can't get 30 days driving or seniority until after peak. Center manger had him on stand by and disqualified him with out a union rep present. Which the BA said should Not have happened. BA said that's the fifth guy this week to be dq'ed and offer to come back as cover for peak that has filed a grievance.

The center manager or DM may very well be playing the free period manning game. Your BA may have a shot at stopping it with the 5 grievances. I applaud him for trying.

If the center manager is now going to "work it out" and let you qualify it is the BA who made it happen. You will owe him a great debt of gratitude if it happens. After you qualify, remember who made it happen. Not the center manager (who was forced). Your center manager will pretend that she "made it happen". Attend your Union meetings and be sure to thank him. You should be grateful.

Grievance will usually go no where. All it will do is make the center manager mad so he will never allow your buddy to qualify. Basically they keep who they want, too many excuses to send you back...real or not real.

They also only followed up with the driver up to day 20 was told by a on road he was going to qualify his on road was on vacation and he was leggy on Standby for a week when he could have worked n the hub but because they disqualified with out informing him or a rep present questions are being asked .. The driver union rep Told him grievance it and he "got him" own know how far that goes but he is know to twist mangment arm ..

BA has zero say in who qualifies and who doesn't.

True but he/she may have a say if mgt did not give the applicant a fair chance.
Getting a chance is fair to mangment .. Can you hit there numbers if you hit there numbers I'm sure they will have a hard time Just disqualifying you.. You would think Safety was to priority. Nope new diver has to be safe with the pressure off being disqualified for any small thing while hitting mangment numbers .. Up side ups pays aLot to do this a driver Told me " ups pays you alot of money to do the job how they won't" which is kinda true ups also think the truck is perfectly organized n u should find a package in 7 seconds!
