Could American politicians follow suit ?

‘Gold-plated’ MP pensions finally get clawed back in new omnibus legislation

Pigs must be flying, hell is probably frozen over and cats everywhere got to be chasing dogs.
On a day that many of us thought would never come, a government -- the Harper government -- has introduced legislation that significantly alters the way MPs, senators and the public sector earn pensions.
For MPs, the new rules — unveiled in the Conservatives' Jobs and Growth Act on Thursday —include changing the age to collect to 65 from 55 and making MPs pay a 50-50 cost-sharing ratio.

Great place for some, but not me. :-)

Reston is a small community in southwestern Manitoba, located near the border of Saskatchewan on the west and
North Dakota on the south.

It is the biggest town in the Rural Municipality of Pipestone, which also includes the towns of Sinclair, Cromer
and Pipestone.
The population is about 550.

Ah small catch

The plan is pretty straightforward: To purchase a property, wannabe homeowners have to sign
an agreement and put down a $1,000 deposit.

Once a lot is purchased, owners have 90 days to begin construction, and 12 months to complete it.
As soon as the town receives your occupancy permit, they will refund $990 of the original down payment.
"You don't have to live here full time, but you do need to put up a permanent structure," said Chalmers.

As further incentive, the town is offering a $6,000 grant to people who've built a new house or purchased an
existing home in the rural municipality.

The grant, mind you, can be used for anything from home upgrades to a new car.

Chalmers says taxes hover around $1,500 to $2,500 per year.

Kind of old news, but as of Nov 1st this new regulation takes into full effect, Canada wide ! (proud to be Canadian) :)

All immigrants face mandatory language test

Born and raised in New York, Dodi Robbins graduated from Harvard University and has been practising law for 13 years.
Her first language is English. Yet like all other skilled immigrants applying to settle in Canada, the American corporate lawyer must now take a language test to prove her English is good enough to settle here.

“I was outraged, insulted and floored,” said Robbins, who obtained her law degree at Benjamin N. Cardozo Law School in New York. A mother of two, she has been working in Toronto on a work permit for four years as compliance and regulations counsel for an international financial services company.
“I almost fell off the chair. I’ve been practising law here for years and I have to prove my proficiency in English?”

Too bad those in Quebec don't face the same law.

Canadian MPs blast record campaign spending in Obama-Romney showdown

OTTAWA - Canadian politicians watching the outcome of the U.S. presidential election came together across party lines Tuesday as they denounced the record $6 billion US spent in the bitterly divisive political race south of the border.

Baird said: "The one thing I'm tremendously pleased with in Canada is that fact that Stephen Harper and our government have taken the influence of big money out of politics. That's something we should take great pride in, in Canada."

See how the Kumbaya-ing pays off ??

TORONTO – A vandal defaced a west-end war memorial shortly after Remembrance Day ceremonies wrapped on Sunday.

“Canada will burn praise Allah,” was written with permanent marker across the monument in Coronation Park, police said.

A passerby alerted cops about the damage.

City of Toronto workers were on scene Sunday night cleaning the memorial.

I got the old 1, 2 and 5, those are the bills I grew up with.
$1 bill, I was happy and considered "rich" as a kid.
$5 ! That would be a $50 almost these days ! Once in a blue moon I got one of them.

As a kid, I found one of those $2 bills on a hotel/bar parking lot. I was happier then crap.
Back in those days, a can of coke was 10 cents, chips 15 cents (large bag) or chocolate bars 5 cents.
For a quarter, I used to get pop and chips.

If I only had nickles or dimes, I would buy those 2 for 1cent candies, such as mojos, or those strawberrys for a penny.

I tell you, after living Canada as a kid and then comming back, I was really disapointed how much inflation went up.

It was like almost like not being in the same country I left.
