Read up on your Old Testament. It will give you a deeper insight into the life and ministry of Jesus. Jesus' life was largely a living metaphor for the history of the Israelites.

After settling in the promised land the Israelites demanded to have an Earthly King, just like the surrounding nations. As punishment, God gave them what they asked for. That sparked a series of multiple times where the nation of Israel was over taken and enslaved by the Babylonians, the Persians, and finally the Romans. It seems to me that one of the purposes of the Israelites being chosen as God's people was to bear witness to history and the rise and fall of empires, and to document it.
