Yes they do.
But the best they can hope for is a matching 401K for new employees instead of a pension. And then as us old retirees die off, no more pension liability.

It was both. Clearly the union understood even then the pension was in trouble and needed more participants. Ended up not working for a lot of different reasons.I thought it was about the PTers.

But I am a beneficiary of the full-time jobs that the company was eventually forced to honor.. The day I was asked if I wanted to go full-time package car driving was the same day I was asked if I wanted one of the first 22.3 jobs at my building.

Mine is paid 100% by UPS now and for 5 more years,when I hit 65 half comes from CS and under the contract I retired under UPS must pay any of CS short comings, so I’m sure they are happy with the CS bailout.
