Series Remains at 24 events; Second Event Added in Charlotte; Countdown to the Championship to Start at Mac Tools U.S. Nationals
It’s the newest and most spectacular drag racing venue on the tour, and in 2010 zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C. will play host to two NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events. The new event is one of several exciting changes NHRA announced today as the world’s largest motorsports sanctioning organization revealed its 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule. The state-of-the-art dragstrip in the Charlotte, N.C. metro region will be the setting for two events: one in the spring and one in the fall, with an inaugural event added to the schedule on March 25-28, and the third annual NHRA Carolinas Nationals set for Sept. 16-19.
“Charlotte is quickly becoming a motorsports capital in the United States, rivaled only by Indianapolis, and the reception we have received from the fans and the number of major sponsors and teams that use the area as a base lead us to believe that it will provide the market foundation for those two races to evolve into among the two biggest events in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series,” said Tom Compton, president, NHRA. The inaugural race in September last year featured special guests, packed stands and significant corporate hospitality.
The 56th Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Sept. 1-6 at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, will represent the first race in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to 1, NHRA’s championship playoffs. The Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the world’s largest and most prestigious drag racing event, is scheduled for its traditional spot on the calendar -- Labor Day weekend.

Leading into the Western Swing, the schedule will feature four events in a row during the month of June. The United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Chicago (June 3-6) will be followed in consecutive weeks by the United Association NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. (June 10-13); NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tenn. (June 18-20); and the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio (June 24-27). The Thunder Valley NHRA Nationals was moved to this stretch in June to accommodate the early-spring Charlotte event.
As is tradition, the season concludes right back where it started in Pomona, Calif. with the 46th running of the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals (Nov. 11-14). The event has become “championship” weekend as most of the NHRA Full Throttle world championships in the four professional categories have been crowned at the event since the beginning of the playoff-style format in 2007.
Events that round out the early part of the season include the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix (Feb. 26-2

I am. Always have always will. Besides I can catch up on my sleep during the cab race.
Had a great time last night. I went to the IRL race in Joliet, talk about some close racing. Of course if I didn't know it was Aug. I would've thought it was Oct. the way weather was.

Speaking of Charlotte, don't know if you saw this concerning plans for the upcoming drag race at Zmax Dragway.
Been keeping up with the US Nationals going on as we speak as Big Daddy Don Garlits returned to the driver seat but not behind the infamous Swamp Rat. Sadly, Big failed to make the show as Stock Eliminator ain't as easy as some might think.

Actually it's Steve's son Kraig who drives for Smoke and did so this past season. After Steve and Karl parted ways back in the day, Steve's to well established and set in his ways to drive for someone else.
Nice vid of the non-winged USAC sprinter and those guys really have to drive those cars because you have to finese the throttle through the corners. Winged Sprinters just stand on the gas...uh alcohol and go for it. Only time driver even lifts is when he jumps a rut or the RPM's drop when the chassis loads in the corners.
I saw the sprinters at Bristol when they put down the dirt and they went flat out all the way around. At the time Steve Parks held the track record at 126 mph and Sammy Swindell lapped Bristol on dirt at 141 mph. They clocked those cars over 170 mph down the front and back chutes. In fact the track was to fast so that the racing wasn't as good as it would be like at Knoxville or a Terra Haute Action Track.
Nothing against Shatz but I was hoping Saldana could take the points this past season. I'm a big fan of Jac "The Wild Child" Haudenschild because he goes up topside and plays with the cushion! Grew up with southern dirt stock cars but got hooked on open wheel sprinters in the late 80's thanks to Maynard Yingst who was crew chief on Bruce Larson's Funny Car in NHRA. I toyed around with drag racing in the late 70's and early 80's and by pure chance met Maynard where we both realized a passion for all things dirt. After that I was hooked on sprinters but in the early to mid 80's, dirt stock cars used what they called the wedge car and until they were outlawed, they were as fast as a winged sprinter.
Here's a wedge car from 1985' and you can see why these bad boys were wicked fast and they ran big blocks.
I still go to several dirt races a year but it's not nothing like it was in the mid-80's when it was pure outlaw! Sanctioning bodies IMO just SUK!

Steve Kinser will drive the TRS (Tony Stewart Racing) #11 With Bass Pro as a primary sponcer. Kraig Kinser will drive the SKR (Steve Kinser Racing) #11 with Quaker State as an associate sponcer. At least that is what my sorces are saying. I got this info from RacingOne.com. Just checked the Speed website. They are saying the same thing. Steve Kinser not racing the green Quaker State car is going to get some getting used to.
The #20 Bass Pro car as of yet don't have a driver-- they are talking about maybe Jessica Zemken driving it. She's hot

After you posted about Steve I looked on TSR's website and Hoseheads and saw nothing. I just thought you got the names wrong but I did find an article at Examiner.com where Steve himself was quoted that he and his son will switch cars. And thanks for the FYI on this.
I'm still surprised but the end is near for Steve so maybe I shouldn't be. He just had neck surgery as I understand but will be ready for Dirt Weeks at Volusia.

I knew Munchkin is asphalt car but it was a figure of speech, not literal. Sorry for the confusion and no I don't think Tony will run the Chillibowl. I'm not far from Dega so I do from time to time go over for the annual IceBowl which is a late model deal run the same weekend as the Chillibowl at the Talladega Short Track up the street from Big Boy. The racing is better on the dirt too IMO.
My first winter in retirement will be to go to the Chillibowl and then truck south to Florida for Dirt Weeks at Volusia and then across state to East Bay. Later that summer, follow the WoO tour for the "Month of Money" ending at Knoxville and then September at Williams Grove. I figure by then I'd be covered with enough dirt to be called Pigpen!
I use to think I'd do something like that with the NHRA but I'm just not that interested anymore watching corp. billboards at 300 mph. I find the nostalghia drag races (single mags, single fuel pumps, 2 speed lencos and dry hops) more appealing and the up and coming ADRL of way more interest.

Competition Plus website posted this on Parker's crash. Rumors are circulating Parker recently had stints installed and doctors discouraged his racing. After he made the pass (career speed time/speed) the chutes never deployed nor did the car even brake. The speculation is he might have been in some type of cardiac distress but that's the rumor mill for what it's worth. Bob Tasca from the fuel Funny Car ranks gave comments about track safety and the alcohol sportsman ranks.
Cory Mac set a new Top Fuel ET record last night at 3.75 sec and a speed mark at 324 mph for the 1000 ft. mark and if he could have kept the candles lit through the full 1/4 mile, I'm guessing a 4.20 plus sec pass and pushing toward the 350 mph mark. Etown's days sadly may be getting numbered because they need to lengthen the track and can't.
