UPS network revamp bolsters profit in holiday quarter, shares jump – Reuters

United Parcel Service Inc’s multi-billion-dollar effort to revamp its network helped it deliver better-than-expected profit in the crucial holiday fourth quarter, driving down costs as e-commerce deliveries surged to record levels.

Investors cheered the news, sending shares up 6.6 percent to $107.88 in morning trading.

Increased investment in modernizing its network helped the world’s biggest package delivery firm better manage a surge of Christmas packages as more consumers shifted to online shopping, executives said. UPS spent $6.6 billion in 2018 as part of a three-year plan to automate package-sorting hubs, make routes more efficient and invest in airplanes and other equipment.

Analysts said lower operating costs helped the company exceed profit expectations as well.

For This UPS Driver, Saving Dogs Has Become a Habit – American Kennel Club

Three weeks before Christmas, one of the busiest times of year for package delivery, Ryan began his day as he normally does. He said goodbye to his girlfriend and his 14-year-old dog, Hara. For Montana, it wasn’t that cold of a day, he says, with temperatures between 30 and 40 degrees. He finished his morning office deliveries and then headed to his residential route in the afternoon.

As he drove past a pond, he began to hear what sounded like a dog screaming.

“It sounded like somebody was beating the dog,” Ryan says. “Like if you’ve heard a dog in distress, and if you’re an animal lover, and if you have a heart or a conscious, you’re gonna want to know what’s going on.”

Man says he was forced to check a box identifying his race, sues UPS for $600,000 – Oregonlive

A Portland man is suing United Parcel Service for $600,000, claiming the package-delivery company forced him to check a box designating his race on his employment application and then retaliated when he complained about it.

Kaon-Jabbar East El claims in his lawsuit that being required to identify himself as a certain race or ethnicity violated his religious beliefs of Islamism. UPS’ human resources department told him he couldn’t go back to employee orientation before selecting a box, according to the suit filed Tuesday in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

The lawsuit also says East El believed that none of the options on the form accurately reflected his ethnicity and the job application didn’t include an “other” box. East El’s national origin is Moorish, from the people who inhabited North and Northwest Africa, according to his suit.
