Corp Marketing Layoffs

For those of you in Marketing - what are your thoughts on the Marketing layoffs at the corporate office on Monday? Any word on how many got the axe?

i think these positions are being shifted from corporate to the district level, the reasoning being that every district will have unique customer mixes and marketing needs. I've not heard about any straight layoffs, but I would guess these people could move into these new positions. From what I understand the marketing department at UPS is expanding.

From what I heard, they put them all in a conference room, let them know it was their last day and then told them they will be walked out and their personal belongings will be sent to them. Ouch.

First they gave them a little policy book discussion about our partnership legacy. Then they gave them autographed DVDs with Scott Davis' little talk that was on UPSERs.com. THEN they told them they were no longer needed.

I have a very close contact in the corporate office who called me today. The person could not talk long so I don't have any more info than what I am posting below.

They were walking people out today and the former employee was told they could take their purse or lunch sack and everything else will be sent to them. I imagine it is not a fun place to be right now!

Wow...

Hopefully they get some kind of compensation package or assistance with searching for a new job. Never like to hear of a fellow UPSer, management or hourly, losing their job for no reason besides "downsizing and cost control". If they were given no warning or advance notice and simply walked out, UPS has seriously become a dark and nasty place to work. There are better and more classy ways to do things and treat your employees with dignity.

This is correct. There were 50 people affected of which 5 - 10 were offered the opportunity to apply for positions elsewhere (Sales mostly). The others were offered a seperation package and escorted out.
A terrible day in UPS history and another nail in the UPS culture and partnership.
I feel sorry for some of these people who dedicated and gave themselves to UPS and are now cast aside.
I also feel sorry for the HR and Security people that had to carry out the decisions of upper level management who were not to be seen. Typical of the lack of leadership shown by UPS upper level management these days. Jim Casey and the old-time real leaders of United Parcel Service would have been directly involved with these people. Now it is just another task assigned to lower level minions.

But life goes on.

i haven't gotten a good sales lead in 3 years. you all are like a broken record. maybe if I did, none of this would have to happen.

when will the drivers make a concession?

When the company stops making hundreds of millions of dollars in PROFIT per quarter.

It's called a contract for a reason. Check back with me when it gets close to expiring, and you quit making PROFIT. If it makes you sleep better at night, management barely follows the contract as it is now anyway...

If you want to start throwing out labels, I'll play the game as well. "you all are like a broken record" doesn't sit well with me, and I'm pretty sure won't get you any sympathy from anyone else. With that kind of attitude is there any wonder our attitude is for you to do your own damn work?

That's funny, because I get customers who tell me they haven't seen a good sales rep in over 3 years. So if you're not getting good leads from drivers, and you're obviously not getting good new business on your own since we're not growing as much as corporate wants us to; what exactly is it that you do again?

Maybe you'd have better luck selling AVON, Mary Kay, cancer-curing water, or some exotic purple fruit juice... on the bright side, they do ship via UPS.

it's called running a business, to make profit.

my job isnt to get sales leads, thanks though. that is your job. i really don't give two craps who it sits well with. the people that get pissed off are the exact people that should be making concessions.

no, i sell transportation, and we have 6.1 million daily customers, yeah, they dont all get a visit. we cant afford that many sales people....hmmm, i wonder why?

i am converting business in my account base, not knocking on doors. that's not in my job description.

and you don't think I am a good sales rep? good. I am a Senior Account Executive. you = driver.

No drivers or aircraft mechanics are willing to make a concession as long as 4th quarter results show the dough rolling in. I aint paying for health care and no driver will pay in 2013. We have contracts and if UPS dont want a service disruption they will provide health care for front line employees. I hate to see Corp marketing layoffs and I hate to see 300 pilots run off the property but every work group has layoffs and soon everyone union member will be back at work. We need a person to run UPS as in "growing the business" not selling it off. As long as a package person is not at the top I think UPS cannot be run like a tight ship. Oh did I mention no union members will be making concessions?

i would never take a contract that protects the lazy ass working beside me. pay should be based on performance, nothing else.

The 4th quarter increase was from NDA and INT volume. Just as the 3rd quarter stated NDA and Int volume. Maybe the sales dept can give back so we get free health care. Since you have alot of lazy asses in sales we need to get rid of more of internet surfers and idlers. Then we can hire more drivers and pilots and sorters and mechanics. Thanks for clearing that up.
