They would both win the popular vote. My point was this British election doesn’t put to rest the Brexit question.

Could have fooled The New York Times:

Brexit’s Advance Opens a New Trade Era

The decisive Conservative victory in Britain leaves no doubt that in today’s global equation, national interests are supreme and globalization is suspect.”

Britain’s voters made that clear on Thursday in handing an emphatic majority to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party, all but ensuring that the world’s fifth-largest economy — and a charter member of the international trading system — will proceed with its abandonment of the European Union.”

When even the New York Times admits Brexit will happen its time to admit its over. British people voted for it a long time ago and the politicians who kept dragging their feet on the issue got sent packing.
Boris still needs to finish the deal. There will be plenty of turmoil and politicians campaigning on returning to the EU for a long time.

With the Tories having a clear majority the British have sent a strong signal to their government. A major reason the Soviet Union fell apart was the ethnic and racial divides. Most people don't want a diverse society, they want their own country. The White British were alarmed at how fast their country was being transformed under the EU.

Backers of progressive candidates like Sens. Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, however, can point to distinct local factors that shaped the election result in the UK, most significantly Brexit.

Those localities are much like our Midwest Rust Belt.
