Highly Paid Union Workers Give UPS a Surprise Win in Delivery Wars
FedEx’s less costly contractor drivers were supposed to give it an edge. But labor shortages are hobbling services.

They've been using helpers all year round here at FedEx ground![]()

it's not nearly as bad over here as it is over there, it's getting as bad though here -- but that could be fixed with one quick change from the ivory tower. but that would require MEM to actually do something drastic. They act as if Express is rolling along fine and all the problems are with Ground. We all know THAT’s not true.
Shhhhh! Don't let @59 Dano know! He believes an underpaid workforce is superior, and will outperform simply because management feeds them a diet of lies!![]()

Reaffirms what we've talked about in the past. It's a poor setup. Fat Freddy wastes oceans of oil and mountains of manpower and horsepower . Now as long as all of it was cheap and readily available he could get away with it. We'll just have to wait and see if he can somehow adapt now that it isn't.![]()

I knew that article would be popular with people here. Its message is that if FedEx spent more money to retain employees, it wouldn't have to spend more money to retain employees. Such nonsensical logic is hard to beat.Shhhhh! Don't let @59 Dano know! He believes an underpaid workforce is superior, and will outperform simply because management feeds them a diet of lies!
Actually, if Fred was committed to creating the most efficient package delivery service, and wasn’t so threatened by the thought of dealing with collective bargaining, he could afford to pay competitively, and managers would be able to browbeat employees who were actually afraid to lose their jobs.I knew that article would be popular with people here. Smith is probably the biggest control freak in corporate America. Coupled with his deep-seated hatred of unions and having been raised as a spoiled rich kid, well the rest is self explanatory.Actually, if Fred was committed to creating the most efficient package delivery service, and wasn’t so threatened by the thought of dealing with collective bargaining, he could afford to pay competitively, and managers would be able to browbeat employees who were actually afraid to lose their jobs.
OTD:...UPS 95% Fat Freddy's CHUPS...85%. And the media is chewing his nuts off.Actually, if Fred was committed to creating the most efficient package delivery service, and wasn’t so threatened by the thought of dealing with collective bargaining, he could afford to pay competitively, and managers would be able to browbeat employees who were actually afraid to lose their jobs.
And now that Fat Freddy and his loyal subjects have themselves in a hell of a mess...what do they do? Same as always. They expect people to come in off the street put forth a heroic and Herculean effort, busting their butts get them caught up, back in the good graces of their shipping customers, get them out of the god awful mess the greedy expletive deleted got themselves into.... and what do they have to show for it? What is the thanks they get for it? On Christmas morning they are informed that they have simply been disposed off and back left fending for themselves.Smith is probably the biggest control freak in corporate America. I’m sure Memphis elite employees like Dano will step up to the plate, roll up his sleeves and log out of his computer and head home for the holidays no later than December 23rd at noon. And now that Fat Freddy and his loyal subjects have themselves in a hell of a mess...what do they do? What has changed here is that people are no longer willing to be treated in such a disrespectful manner.
Vintage freight. Cool idea there Fred. They’ve already made the decision at my station to roll it each day. We’ll still get that freight in the afternoon but those cans will sit until the next morning.
