I have no problem with this technology. As far as I am concerned, they should have cameras in all the package cars, the only requirements being that the driver be aware of the camera and that management not have the ability to alter or edit whatever is recorded. It would be neat to be able to show the misloads, crappy load and traffic issues to the camera.

Geees, they are taking away one of the biggest perks of the job, IMO. That being in the old days(yesterday) a driver didn't have to put up with the boss looking over his/her shoulder all day long. At least we still can't smell their breath.

One case scenario fuss : Yesterday while delivering an extended town route( 60 miles), I had 30 stops left @ 5:00pm and my air was supposed to be back at the home center at 6:30pm (no exceptions). The other driver in the area had 7 stops left. With the computer showing this info an uninformed OMS or FT sup would jump on that to instruct us to split up the remaining stops. The problem is (and will be) the driver with only 7 stops left also has around 130 miles to drive to get those stops delivered , then start his 60 mile return trip to the center. It only took me 10 to 15 minutes to explain all this to the uninformed OMS. BTW, I actually started calling the OMS around 3:30 with predictions of what came to be reality.

Technology is designed to provide information to an informed user so that the operation can run more smoothly; however, as Trpl noted, this information, when provided to an uninformed user, may as well have been in Chinese for all that it was worth.

Forty6and2, it sounds to me as though you do a great job but it also sounds as though you may need to slow down a bit or you may very well be asked to help out others who may not be as smooth with the methods as you appear to be.

This technology doesn't come cheap. Obviously they have more money than they know what to do with.

That being said, let them have at it. If they feel better about knowing what you do every minute of the day, so be it. It's no different than being a factory worker on the production line. Doing everything by the book (methods) and not taking the time to address a customers concerns will be an additional cost above and beyond the cost of all this technology.

Just because something is possible, doesn't necessarily make it a good idea. The cost of all this technology ultimately gets passed on to the customer. Rates are already ridiculous. Maybe customers will turn to a company that's not so obsessed with tracking its' employees every move and to one that is more concerned with tracking their shipment.

The technology is out there and it is not expensive. We have a lot here and can gather a great deal of info in a very short period of time. The newer cars have a black box in them that records a lot of things that you would not believe. Our equipment is monitored by small sensors in them that can even take measurements. Cameras all over, small ones...I work as directed and do not wory about what info they gather. The new technology will be included in a lot of the things we buy.....

And as a citizen of the U.S.......this doesn't bother you why?

I'm not worried about the info they gather on me while I'm working. I just think that it's a waste of money. If they have no trust in their employees, what is left? Sure, there are those few that "work the system". But to put all under a microscope is being just a little (no...a lot) paranoid.

As a citizen, I am more concerned about these type of technologies being used on a much broader basis by our government.

Freedom and a right to privacy are becoming rarer and rarer. And if your not the least bit concerned, you might end up regreting that apathy later.

It would not matter to me how many stops I had left as I would not give work to another driver. Not that I would want overtime, but they can not take work from you and give it to another driver. Go ahead and jump on me, but there is language in the supplement where I work to cover that. Like I said, don't want the extra overtime, but also don't think we should need to take care of dispatching on the road. The great PAS/EDD deal should be able to send every run out with the perfect amount of stops.

Incidentally, I am on feeders right now, but usually end up on delivery frequently as things change a lot around our shack in the woods.

The original poster should be more concerned with layoffs in the Phoenix area...volume is waaay down in Phoenix. Submit a producing sales lead!

Alot of the drivers in our center arrived to work today with shiny new DIAD IV's to replace our worn out DIAD IV's. Smelling a rat, I asked the closing sup about it tonight. He said that additional software was added to the DIAD. Mentioned something called D.I.D. or something like that. We've had OMS-e for a few months already so I'm not really sure what the new stuff is but I'm sure we'll hear about it eventually. Anyone know anything else?

Who cares the on roads let them watch. like they have time to do that, our center manager is gone at 3

Maybe your center manager is working the preload. That does happen from time to time, particularly when the dispatch is screwed up or a new preload sup or manager is assigned to the center. Do you know what time the manager comes to work? I would guess it's while you are turning off your alarm.

Your comment regarding sending help or adjusting the dispatch on route, I have never heard of in my 28 years of UPS. What area do you work in, if you don't mind sharing. I just find your comment intriguing, regarding UPS and your local coming to agreement as you stated.
Thank for any info.

Though I rarely need or ask for help, I never stand in the way of those that desire to deliver packages assigned to my truck. My parents taught me to share.
