Brett, now why would I care if that welfare receipient went out and bought a $5 joint, or a $5.00 pack of beer ?
They are old enough. It should be their decision if they rather have a Big Mac and Fries (no healthier, but something to eat)....

If they spend that little money foolishly, and starve, they'll learn on their own.
If their friend offers them a joint... they'll need to resell it, I suppose, and if they get caught, it's even worse !
Why can't they just have a puff like in old days ?

This is the same as welfare receipients going to the casino, or buying booze, or even want to buy a T-Bone steak, just once per month.
Why not ?

It's like giving a kid pocket money - let the kid decide how he'll make that money last for a week. (Everyone should have learned that lesson as a child) !

I personally don't care where or what they spend their money on. If it doesn't last the month - like I said - they'll learn the hard way !

First off, I care because they are supporting a habit that they don't need to support on money that is taken from me and others at the point of a gun. I think it is safe to say that these government assistance programs were not meant to be a way of life, but as a helping hand to someone in a time of need. The rub comes in when the systems themselves are designed to keep the people in them dependent on the system rather than giving them an incentive to forge their own path through life, and I'm betting that losing the right to vote, regular and random drug tests, as well as asset insepections will make government assistance as uncomfortable as it can be so that it doesn't become a way for people to sustain themselves on indefinitely. I fully understand that stuff happens and there are cases where people simply cannot help themselves and or need help from others, but I don't think living on the goodwill of others is an acceptable way to live.

Allow me to put it to you another way. Say my friend lost his job, and asked me to help maybe make his car, house, bike payment while he searches for another job. I would probably help them so long as I saw they were trying to improve their situation. Now lets say that same friend lost his job because he was caught drinking while at said job. I would be much less inkleined to help them and would probably in fact let them loose what is important to them so that they can feel a consequence for their action. I will not support someone else's bad decisions.

You know, Lucy, I won't argue with you.
Really? You keep doing so with your constant America Bashing. Im begining to think you have a penis size issue in regards to Canada. If you think America is richer then us, and your proud that not every American gets healthcare, and proud that people living on welfare for a $134 monthly check need to undergo drug testing first to receive it. - Then so be it !
There you go again...you really need to seek treatment.

You must be also proud that you as a Nation has more debt then us, a lower credit rating, and a never ending trade deficit.
You must also be proud that states and towns/cities have so much debt, that they need to lay off police, firemen, teachers, and more.
Penis size again....

And the looks of it, things won't get better, unless the American people are ready to step up, and pay a bit more on taxes to get the country back on track, SS secured, as well as medicare.
Problem is, I think the American people might actually agree on that - but your politicians concentrate more on a re-election, then on the country as a whole.
Blah, blah, blah...broken record Klein.

And that's sad !
You just looked in the mirror?

Give me one single reason why Americans pay the lowest taxes in 50+ years !
I can't figure that one out myself !
There is so much you cant figure out.

But, you might as well enjoy it, while it lasts ! (just hope you don't have any children that will make up the shortfall in years to come) !
And i hope that you never have any childern.

Don't we see, hear, do the same type of misguided pigeonholing at UPS, regarding management being incompetent? or Union laziness?

You need to find a new fetish other than blaming welfare recipients for collecting $100 a month off the govt and somehow making a huge dent in the countries and farther reaching financial woes.

..That is miniscule money compared to what companies like Wal-Mart and FedEx are buying in loopholes and cheating hard working people out of, that DO NOT rely on welfare assistance and work 60 hours a week ( or in the FedEx Ground guys case, works 60 hours a week AND still is on welfare)....

You DO know that Florida is like the #1 state for retirees...........most are not wealthy, so I don't know where you get the "tons of rich people". You can't just say stuff like that because you saw 1 guy in a limosine when you were in Florida.

No Moreluck, but take a little cruise down the ocean side and thru the canals of Ft lauderdale... go look at Oprah's home, and all the other mansions and huge yachts.
And it goes all the way down the ocean side.... all thru Florida..... long strech worth billions and billions of dollars !

Anyone living in Florida, on BC, will verify that, too !

Florida is the 15th largest gap in the U.S. as far as income inequality. And we know there is quite a bit of $$ to go around in Florida with the prime real estate, attractions, travel/tourism , etcetc

Travel & tourism doesn't necessarily mean from the Florida residents. Too many shows about "early bird cheap eats" to call all those retirees rich!! They move to Florida for the affordable real estate.......not Jupiter like Tiger or Celine......more like The Villages....where all you need is a golf cart.

I've never understood this fetish with income inequality. This is mostly irrelevant to anything of economic importance, and so long as inflation is kept in check it has no meaning at all. I know and understand there are people who make millions of dollars a year, and honestly I applaud those who do rather than try and tear them down.

I'm curious how you propose drug testing a corporation, or who within that corporation should be tested. The government should focus more on the rights of its people and less on its own power and prestige.

Agreed with the 2nd part but as to the first part, below is my comment to that very point I made in post #55 in the Welfare thread.

And since we are testing welfare recipients for drugs, let's test the middle level/upper level managers and boards of the big corp. welfare recipients and see what kinda results you get there.

You could also add in the board of directors and I'd even add in stock holders as they enjoy a direct profit for corp. welfare as it boosts the bottomline. Truth is Brett, if you want to test everyone in this country who enjoy gov't subsidy, privilege and welfare benefit, every damn one of us would be getting a drug test and therein was my point of just how deep this thing is. In effect, we're all socialists now but yet we only recognize the so-called welfare queen because it's so easy to demonize!

If we realized for once we all are forced to live in the glass house too, we might actually begin to change things instead of wasting time running up and down goat trails that lead to nowhere!

I was waiting for you to take this to some unreasonable extreme. Please, tell me how as a stockholder of UPS I can put food on my table soley because of the government? Or how about even though I am a productive member of society should be treated as the most unproductive members of society(ie welfare queens). My whole thing is if someone's very existance and lifestyle is funded completely or mostly by government tax dollars then they should be put into the most uncomfortable position so that they are motivated to get out of that lifestyle. If you want to go after people who live completely on food stamps and government handouts I am fine with that. Going after business executives who go into capital hill and beg the government for money to stay in business is also fine, but going after people who have no say in these decisions and in fact are funding them is ridiculous at best.

Today they (CNN) said, 25% of all CEO's earn more money then their whole company pays on taxes. Something doesn't sound right, but that's the way it is "down there" !

No our companies actually pay taxes, and it's against the law for them to support politicians or political parties (so no write offs there, either)...

Parties in Canada can only get funds from public people, like myself. NOT companies or organizations.
Party memberships fees, they help them too, as well as dinner fund raising.

And ofcourse, our CEO's don't earn close to what yours do. Even though we have large companies like Blackberry maker (RIM) and oil, gold, silver, etc, related companies.
The greed isn't as much here, - that's all.
