Gas up again!

Just paid $1.73 for gas. Diesel was $2.86. I really feel bad for those who locked into their heating oil price this past summer when the price was over $4.00 / gal. I hope they have some recourse.

I agree that it is unfortunate for those folks who chose to lock in their heating oil prices but let's suppose for a second that the price of oil had continued to climb. These folks would be praised for having had the foresight to lock in prices and the fuel oil companies would be scrambling to make up the difference. A contract is a contract and both sides need to abide by its terms.

We are facing something like a $10 trillion federal deficit.

The best way to attack that deficit...instead of handing it off to our grandchildren....would be to create an immediate $1 per gallon federal tax on gasoline, to be applied directly towards the deficit.

$1 a gallon tax means we pay around $3 at the pump, which is about $1 less than we were paying over the summer.

To a large extent it is a voluntary tax. If you want to pay less....drive less, or choose a fuel-efficient car.

Whatever happens, I hope we Americans have finally taken to heart the lesson we should have learned in 1974, again in 1980, or again earlier this year; its time to start making rational and sustainable choices about the vehicles we choose to drive. Its time to recognize that there is only so much oil on the planet, and once we burn it up it will all be gone. Its time to recognize that when we choose to import oil from the Middle East we are paying money to the very people who are trying to destroy us.

I highlighted the two sentences above as you have described the basic principle of the Fair Tax. It is basically a user fee (23% sales tax across the board) which would provide the government with all of the money that they need to operate and perhaps a surplus to help reduce the deficit.

Unfortunately, Sober, people have short memories and I think you will see some (not all) return to their old habits.

To take care of the defecit would be great but people can not afford to pay $3 at the pump or get a new car at least not most people and if the defecit was taken care off I am afraid it would just happen again in a few years.

I bought a new car that is better on gas coincidentally just before the big jump in price (before it went to $4+ per gallon). The money I save in gas alone nearly pays for the car payment as opposed to what I used to drive. I went from a Ford Explorer V8 to a full optioned Ford Focus. It wasn't brand new but it was a couple years old with about 14k miles on it and the price was great so I bought it.

Now that I have it, I would not go back. Yeah I need to borrow a friends truck now and then to move big items and what not, but the car is decent in the snow (traction control and other safety gizmos help) and has decent zip for a 4 banger. Sure I get made fun of for having a little car sometimes, but I don't care. I'm not the one who worries about filling their car up (well no one does anymore but at the time). Other than the scenario mentioned, having a smaller car hasn't been an issue at all, actually its been great. It's easier to park (fit in smaller spaces haha) for one, which is a big help finding a parking space at school as there is a lot of parallel parking there and lets face it, the 30mpg or better avg. I'm getting doesn't hurt whether gas is $1.74 (currently) or $4.15 (highest it went around here).

Make sure you go to a grassy field to you can learn the "soft" way how to unclip rather than learning the "hard" way on pavement in traffic. I learned by stopping my bike then unclipping, so now it is instinct, course my legs were really sore but it is worth it.

Back to gas...
Last Wednesday when I went to school at 6:00 it was 2.19, when I drove home it was 1.89, amazing how much gas prices can drop in 3 hours.

Haven't mastered it, as today was my first full ride, but I did kick some butt. I rode from 2-5mph faster today. Wind was not a factor. Felt great. Thanks for the tip, Mike. I'm using speedplay pedals, which snap right in and slide right out. Really appreciate all the help, Mike.

You would have loved the traffic cam video of me forgetting to release my feet from my tightened toe cages. The only word that comes to mind is, Timber!
