Republicans haven't won a popular president election since G. Bush Sr. They continue to lose ground when it comes to popular vote. The only way they can stay in power is to rig election laws, gain partisan control of local election boards, and gerrymander districts.
The simple facts is this. Republicans are minority party. They don't lead by ideas but through legislative thuggery.
Imagine for a moment that Trump and allies in the House of Representative had been successful with their objecting to electoral delegates and sending the vote to the full house. It would have meant that the decision to elect a president would come down to 1 vote. 24 states Democrats and 26 states Republican. Over 80 million voters would have been nullified by 1 vote.
Now, there is no legal means to object to electoral delegates and that's why Pence balk at it.
But, what Republicans have been doing on the state level is akin to what they tried to do in Congress. They want to be able to manipulate what party gets the most votes through gerrymandering, suppress people (see people of color) from voting, and if that fails, nullify results and declare themselves the winner. They are making a mocker of elections. Putin did the same thing when he destroyed democracy in Russia. The Republican have literally ripped a page from Putin's authoritarian playbook.
State lawmakers continue to introduce voting and elections bills at a furious pace.
