Government money got involved. Colleges started spending to build fancy rock climbing, fancy building, etc, to attract students. Tuition was jacked to pay for the resort.

A lot of the Boomers got their college education paid for by the GI Bill. It's still available--try it and quit crying about how tough you have it.

There are the professions that don't pay a lot but are needed, for the society to run properly, i.e. social work, and teachers. A lot of places teachers require a master's degree, and have to furnish their room "decor".
