This isn't about you. Walk away tall for having gotten a few honest answers and genuinely good advice from an anonymous internet forum and maybe save the shock for when your trampoline or broccoli gets derailed.
If you show you have good work ethic, you probably could have given a worse reason and still be in line for management. Most new hires suck. If you don't suck your supervisor will want to keep you so as not to have to deal with new hires, who as mentioned mostly suck and are dumb and/or lazy.
