President Trump

Does he not understand that those tariffs are paid by American consumers and American businesses?

The Democrats would be wise to call China tariffs the "Trump Tax" and explain it to the American public as often as it can through Presidential election season.

What Is A Tariff And Who Pays It?

"A tariff is a tax on imported goods. Despite what the President says, it is almost always paid directly by the importer (usually a domestic firm), and never by the exporting country. Thus, if the US imposes a tariff on Chinese televisions, the duty is paid to the US Customs and Border Protection Service at the border by a US broker representing a US importer, say, Costco.

The Chinese government pays nothing, just as the US government pays no tax to Canada for that nation’s tariffs on imported dairy products. Rather, an importer or supplier for a Canadian supermarket pays the duty on Wisconsin cheese that lands in the grocer’s dairy counter (though I suspect few Canadian retailers are selling much US cheese these days, given the recent unpleasantness between the two countries)."

the explanation you provide is correct in classic definition simplistic fashion and makes a compelling argument against tariffs for those that wish to disagree with Trump. In reality the issue is much more complicated then that text book explanation.

with the last round of tarrifs if china does nothing their economy sells us less product and they take a financial hit .
to counter that they are then forced to sell their product for less and or engage in currency devaluation to offset the tariffs and maintain their sales.
china did both with the last round of tariffs.
China has the choice to either pay the tariff or suffer the economic consequences of selling less.
there is no economy like ours that can pick up the slack for china.

its why Trump continues to use the piggy bank explanation to explain the tariffs. The US is the piggy bank and can cause them financial hardship if we don't buy their products.

Posts like this do not help your credibility.

Responses like that don’t help yours.

Jury is in, if we don’t change our wayward ways, we’re gonna die here.

Which is a possible answer to Fermi’s Paradox: the reason we haven’t been visited by interstellar aliens is because they ramped up the same trajectory that we’re on...

And they died on their own planet due to climate death. It’s a natural response for any planetary civilization.

The amount of planetary destruction that is equivalent to reaching the level of producing an iPhone is irreversible, unless you pay attention.

We’re not paying attention...

The saddest part about the whole thing, besides the destruction of our planet, and the subsequent death of most living plants and animals, is that fixing the planet could be the literal fix for the global economy and create unimaginable wealth and prosperity along the way. Everyone who wants a good job could have one - not just A job, but a GOOD job.

Updating infrastructure around the world with green energy and building materials would be a decades long process and is a win win for everyone - we get a cleaner, safer, healthier planet to pass along to future generations, and we get people working and contributing to the new global economy in the process.

This can even potentially help with peace, as cooperation and communication among nations on green initiatives could lead to increased cooperation in other facets, and fostering those relationships will lead to bigger things - like peace, as I said.

The world is in for big changes in the next decade or two, as the quantum computing era arrives, and we're gonna need new types of jobs - green energy/combating global warming with technology can/will provide these jobs.

The only real question is whether they're too late to reverse this mess. Because they are coming sooner or later. Hopefully sooner, because this is not a partisan issue - this isn't even an American issue.

So the Chinese get hurt, the American farmers get hurt, and Donald Trump collects
a tax a “usage tax” a year after huge tax cuts?

That’s going to be a hard sell especially when that tax cut resulted in most people wondering, “Hey! What happened to my tax refund?!?”

carl marx would be proud. this is some of the finest liberal speculative nonsense I have ever read. a 40 trillion dollar bill for green renovation could never be paid for in our lifetime.

the 12 year death of the world hysteria presented by climate alarmists discredits a more compelling message of making sincere changes that allow us to improve the overall environment of our world.

the bill for this green renovation and the hysteria is only a concern in those countries that already do well environmentally. the real polluters the china's and india's could care less.

Sure its a hard sell and its why past presidents gave it lip service but did nothing. Their political future was more important then the good of our country.

China has to be reigned in. The ideal time to do so is while our economy is the bigger stronger one.

Do you view the Chinese made fentanyl , currency manipulation, trademark enfringements , flooding our market with cheaper made products as good things that should be allowed to continue?

We have a trade deficit of 600 billion with china. in simple terms they sell 600 billion dollars more of goods here then we do there.
in a trade war who has more to lose?

this war needs to be fought and won while we have the bigger economy to leverage against them.

to your general point though I think Trump and his people need to do a better job of messaging and I think the media has to do a better job of sharing that message.

you as a member of the media do not have to sell your soul to the devil to simply report why Trump feels this is the right fight at the right time.

its called unbiased journalism.
