The "Clean Cut UPSer" is so who we are that it will be a cold day in you know where before beards would ever be allowed...

Even on the inside, in the offices, where the only people we see are each other; one of the elements that our yearly raises depend on is how well we dress. For the single moms with a slew of kids who don't have the funds for a nice wardrobe, too bad for her...

On the rare occasion I've seen people sent home who rolled out of bed, threw some clothes on and dragged themselves in to work...

In management, films are shown that address every article of clothing and the colors your shoes/clothing must be. Hair cuts and facial hair very carefully addressed.

But what I've seen in the last few years that really surprised me is the drivers (the dudes in particular) with hair much longer than mine and mine's half way down my back. They whip their pony tails up under their hats and away they go. Never thought I'd ever see that happen...

I wish beards were allowed but we are very image oriented. I think well kept mustaches and beards really add to appearances, but you unfortunately can't count on everybody to keep them neat and tidy.

I know what you are saying SAMMIE> I dont want to cut my hair, but when in mgmt, I always had it in a bun, or something like that. Then one day I got a new sup and she let hers fly in a big long tail, then when I went driving, I saw the same with other drivers. So now I just whip it in a tail and go and no one has said a word in 15 yrs.........I even saw a girl once with hair well below her shoulders just leave it down. I dont do that for my own safety. It can get in the way while working. But the tail keeps it just fine.

"I realize that image is important. But to spend so much effort on image on one hand, and then screw your customers with their delivery times (thanks edd) with the other hand.... well, you get my point."

Over, I definitely get your point, but I think UPS has the right to the no beard policy. As we've heard before, its their company. As with anything, if beards were allowed, there would be someone would would not trim his(or hers:w00t: ) for years and scare all the little kids and house wives on his route.

I imagine though if you really wanted to fight it you could say you are muslim and its an important part of your religion to wear one?

What I don't understand is the no beards but you can have a tatoo that starts on the side of your head and runs down the side of your neck all the way to your leg?
No visible tatoos allowed in our building now, new dm says no shorts or short sleeve shirts are to be worn if any tattoo showing....also shop steward said dont push it they would not go to bat for us on this issue our building has the feel of Germany circa 1933

One question. If policy was changed to allow beards as long as neatly trimmed. How would you define "neatly trimmed"? While one person might think his beard falls into the definition of neatly trimmed. Another might not think the same. Seems to me this could be one of those "open to interpretation" debates.

Would supervisors have to walk around with a nascar-like template?

I like the clean-cut look that we have, we look very professional. When I see some of the Fred and DHL drivers with their long hair and scraggly beards and visible tattoos, I realize why we are held in such high regard by the public... we look good, and that means alot.

Hey! about the beard thing....I think we should change the color of the uniform too! Let's make it orange and purple! Then we can be just like everybody else :crying:

Seriously, if you want to have a beard get an inside combo job! The UPS Service Provider job is what it is. The apperance guidelines make us who we are along with the brown uniforms (especially the shorts!:thumbup1: ).

When the movies or TV or a newpaper or magazine article wants a sexy delivery driver who's the one on display? I rest my case!

Oh by the way...I am retired and I am clean shaven!

We are already wearing poop colored uniforms so what's a well trimmed beard or goatee going to do to hurt our image?

Poop colored uniforms.... They lied!!!

United Parcel Service

The brown color that UPS uses on its vehicles and uniforms is called UPS brown, which is seen as professional and elegant.

In fact, it is so attractive that UPS has trademarked the color brown, which prevents other delivery companies from using it as part of their brand..... :bored:

I used to have a body shop on my route before EDD took it away. The owner was good friends with the previous Package Driver (now retired). For some reason he had a can of UPS Brown.................that sure is a hard color to match!!

I know when I see the competition on the street wearing whatever on their face, it looks disgusting. Where I don't think it should apply is inside employees. But I suppose the rules have to be for everyone?

Actually its Pullman brown, don't be misled by wikipedia.
UPS borrowed the color from the Pullman Train company

I have tattoos on each upper arm and only about 2-3 inches of it show below the sleeve on the left and none to a very little on the right. I've only been driving about 2 years, but we've had 3 center managers in that time and various friend/T Sups and noone has said a thing to me. This surprised me, I thought for sure they would make me cover it up. If they ever do I'll just wear a plain brown sweatband on the arm that shows.:thumbup1:

I don’t see a problem with a Goatee if guidelines are in place. I remember seeing a simple sketch years ago that illustrated hair, mustache and sideburn requirements. I don’t see why the same couldn’t be used for facial hair. One requirement could demand the goatee be grown while on vacation, or for some guys, the weekend.:tongue_sm The center manager would have final say, or shave first grieve later.

Wait! That would require some managers to actually come out of their office! :w00t:
