So What If...

...automation does displace 50 million or more workers by 2030? What do those people do to survive? Do we give a universal income to everyone? To just those displaced? To no one at all? What becomes of Social Security? I'm curious as to what you think will happen or should happen. Please, keep the opposite party hatred out of it. This is an issue that will affect all of us. What do you believe will happen? Will it happen at all?

On the state wide live TV public affairs call in show I've put this question on front of my states legislators as it pertains to future state revenues. I should of gone outside and talk to the neighbor's dog. They just sit there with that Buggs Bunny look on their face Future planning from a political perspective is today reduced to getting through from one year to the next.It was once said that if you don't know how to run the new technology.....it will run you. They're right. Either you will prosper from it or you will be impoverished by it.No forseeable middle ground If you don't have the raw intelligence and or the ambition to understand and utilize the onrush of new AI driven technology life for you ain't going to be sweet.

That's a major concern as the new technology will create some jobs but the point is to eliminate as many jobs as possible. So if everyone is trained to fix a widget and yet only so many widget fixers needed. When I was in the Air Force the office I worked in had 4 airmen and computers. Before computers that office had 30 airmen working in it. I'm sure many have seen parks in cities with bandstands. In the early 1900's towns of any size had paid musicians playing evenings at those bandstands. Record players came along and people found they could stay home and listen to the world's best musicians. Put many thousands of musicians out of work. What's being talked about in the near future though is on an unprecedented scale. And without the contributions of all those workers what happens to Social Security?

Put all the soldiers in one area, have enemy nuke that area, and voila! population problem eliminated?
MAD will eliminate the infrastructure needed to pursue AI and a Utopian answer. Then the survivors will have plenty to keep them busy rebuilding, and trying to endure. Problem solved!

Engineer an "Opiod Crisis" to wipe out 70,000+ folks a year. Many of whom live in regions of the country that will be the hardest hit by automation.
That will have an effect but that's about 700,000 in ten years and a lot of those people don't work anyways. Does anyone see a universal income coming? Will companies be forced to contribute?

I mean yeah, certainly plausible. Corporations not wanting to pay rent for office space. Employees work remotely from home. Others just click bait all day on paid advertisement websites. Or create content. Receive universal income. End up spending it at Amazon.

I’ll start dating women and write a book about how I turned myself straight through Jesus. Market it to evangelicals and start a mega church robbing the dumb dumbs for millions.

Wait I should just do that now :)

I hope they gut all the entitlement programs institute a NIT and give nothing to anyone living in Colombia.
Thank you for your contribution. The U.S. pretty much drives the world economy. If this stuff affects not only us, but Europe, China, and Japan too, will we see massive unrest worldwide?

I think scientists have a habit of over promising in their speculations to acquire more funding for their projects and generate interest in their fields.

I’m still not convinced of fully automated trucking or I’d be pursuing an education and marketable skills. I think if we see rising tariffs and minimum wages you will see more interest in automation. Until then third world people working for penny’s on the dollar should be more cost effective than developing technology that you don’t know the political ramifications and legislation that could be passed after investing in your brand new American robot factory.

Hell they haven’t even automated McDonald’s fully. I’ve seen their automation kiosks they suck, multiple times they’ve been broken and needs someone there to take my order. Democrats don’t need an excuse to start dividing up wealth that hasn’t been created yet for people who haven’t lost their jobs yet.

Every time I hear about people trying to hold back innovation I think about Ayn Rand’s Anthem. A dystopian collectivist society that still uses candles because light bulbs would put people out of work.

And yet they are working full-time on implementing such things. As I pointed out before, imagine a military with machines replacing most troops, most fighter jets are drones, automated ships that require a skeleton crew. Think of a couple of million young men out of work and the ramifications of that. I doubt Ayn Rand envisioned the Internet either. "Progress" won't be so for a lot of people. And I've seen the kiosks in McDonald's overseas. They work really well. And I'm not talking about preventing technology from advancing. It will. I'm talking about the ramifications and how do we deal with them?

Counterfeiting.
Being a pro-capitalism fellow does this kind of discussion bother you? I'm pro-capitalism to a point, but let's be honest, capitalism is exploitive. And a lot of capitalists don't buy into Christianity. It's them and their family first, always. The richer the better even if it causes others to struggle. But this requires us to admit something is wrong with the system and we're either going to have to do some socialist things or have people living like vermin. By the millions. Look at favelas in Brazil for examples.
